Update No.2: My Writing Experiment

CrimsonDrops

Writing is easy; all you do is sit staring at a blank piece of paper until the drops of blood form on your forehead. ~Gene Fowler

I’m become a writing machine.

I can’t believe not quite two weeks have gone by since I started my writing experiment.

I’m on track! And, since I started with a detailed plan outline, it’s been much easier to stay focused and write like crazy. I’ve also been able to continue posting three times a week, although I opted to accept Steven’s offer to guest post for me last week to help me lighten my writing load. Thank you, Steven! I loved the comic you drew for us; you are wise beyond your nineteen years.

OK, enough rah-rah news. To be honest, I experienced what could be termed an “incident” this week. I woke up, made my coffee, and then I had an epiphany. As a result—no words came out.

Nada. Zip. Period.

I emailed a confidant of mine to say, (in paraphrasing here), this is nuts!! Who would write a novel this way! I’m just spitting out garbage and this stupid novel will have to be re-written 1,000 times before I will expose anyone to the crap it contains! What a freaking waste of my time! What was I thinking?

Well, that’s pretty much what I wrote.

I took the entire day off of writing, which was a crappy idea. I had not padded any “rest time” into my schedule. But pulling back the reins was probably a good thing in hindsight.

To make a long story short—my email buddy immediately sent me a pep talk and later that evening I got another one from my spouse. The next morning I got up, dusted my self off, and rescued my tally adding ~5,000 words the next day. Ouch! My hands were actually sore that day.

What I’m learning from this writing experiment thus far

1 – All writers feel, at one point or another, that they are producing crap—it’s important to work through the doubt and push through. Thank you to Suzannah, for linking to Alexandra’s post!. These writer-women superheroines are lifesavers!
2 – To be the most productive while I’m writing, I need to shut off email, Twitter, and internet access.
3 – Prior to starting a session, it helps me to set a goal, either number of words or the time that I’m going to plant my buttkiss in my chair for that writing session. I highly recommended this strategy!
4 – This is my month of literary abandon—I should enjoy it! When will I ever have a chance to write like this again? I’m not thinking anytime soon. I am enjoying this and will no longer try to talk myself out of it.
5 – I’ve always brushed off the idea of finding writing buddies or friends to support one’s writing efforts (a lá Julia Cameron’s and other’s advice). Now I know better. If it weren’t for my email buddy and my husband, I’d be sitting here in a lump with an 18,000-word manuscript and a half-eaten case of Ben&Jerry’s ice cream.
6 –To me, NaNoWriMo is not about writing a novel in thirty days, this is about the joy of writing. The novel will begin to take shape in December.

Twelve days left! Thanks for your support!

Thanks for reading this update, too.

I’m glad that you’re still on track. I know it’s not easy…but then again, nothing worth doing ever is. You’ve made it over the hump, and I’m sure you’re gonna finish strong. This is just aother example of why you’re so awesome!

Hey, thanks to some very awesome friends (*ahem*) I’ve been doing OK. It really does help to have friends I can rely on to help get me through and bounce ideas around. It’s made all the difference.

It’s been a little harder than I thought it would be, but I just see this as basic training for writers – and the cool thing is that it is just 30 days and not two months (like my first basic training experience). Plus, no one is making me do push-ups. Right? ;)

      Thanks, Jay. You ROCK! :P

The lack of push-ups (for me) is definitely one of the more attractive things about being a writer. :)

I think it’s great that you are “on track” and that you pushed through your brick wall. Everyone has them and, once you get past one or two, they aren’t so intimidating. They don’t feel quite as permanent, or final.

You’re going to do great with this exercise and, more importantly, with the book which will really start to be shaped up in December. Where do I pre-order?!

      Thanks, Lisis.
Your support with not only this little project with other things going in my life has been really great. I appreciate you!

I actually would prefer to do the hard physical training, but at least my background in that arena is helping me in other walks of life, right? (ha)

I’ll send you my pay-pal account right away so you can make a cash deposit. Well, OK, scratch that. There’s no way I’d make anyone pay for this, especially the state that it’s in right now! :P

I’ll let you know when it’s ready!
      P.S. You’re awesome, chicka!

    Lori:

Thanks for sharing some of your challenges with us and your lessons. I agree with you about point #2…I’m learning that Twitter and the Internet are awesome tools, but they accelerate ADD and are not so great for productivity. In any case, I know you’ll continue to kick butt on this project because you always do. Keep rockin’!

      Hi Tim,
That’s so right about #2. I think if I didn’t control my internet addictions, I’d absolutely become a social media addict! I love interacting with all you guys. But, in the end, I don’t think I’d be happy with a book of 357.14 Tweets! (jk)

Thanks for helping me with this, Tim! You’re the best!

Five thousand words in a day!? Holy cow, Lori, no wonder your hands were sore!

I so know what you’re saying, though. I only managed a little over 1000 today … just plain ran out of steam, in part due to dreaded plot holes that kept jumping out at me.

    We’ll get there, though!

So glad for your friend and your hubby … and their wonderful encouragement.

Yeah, that day hurt! I promised myself I’d never get behind the curve ball again! ;)

Thanks for rooting me on and also for being my writing buddy! It’s been fun having you along for the ride.

Keep writing the good write! :)

Ha, you got it. Projects about love doing what you are doing and having buddies to support you.
If we do everything in life that way we all will always succeed.
So we love what you are doing and we are your buddies, for now until we read what you have wriiten :)
Need to keep the pressure to perform up, don’t we?

      Hi Wilma!
      I just love it when I see your Avatar on my site. You’re like my guardian angel. {hug}

I’m learning that more and more as life goes on – not to be so *independent*! I’ve had to learn how to depend more on others also in dealing with my MS, so I’m getting lots of life lessons this year, for sure!

Thanks for your support. I’ll try to not let performance pressure get the best of me, either. (ha!) ;)

And what about the characters, plot, and details? Let me know how I can support your NaNoWriMo experience, because I want it to be a great success! : )

      Ali-Bee!!
Awww, I love it when I see you here. You are such a great friend. It’s been you all along that has supported the idea of me writing a book and got my arse in gear! I can remember discussing this over dinner last year!! Do you?? I don’t know what I’d do without friends like you.

Since you asked how best you can support me (that’s awesome that you’d ask, by the way), I suppose just to know that I’m not on email as much or the web in general. So, if I seem “more silent” than normal, just know I’m tip-typing away over here. ;)

About the book, well, it’s creative non-fiction. You know, like those great movies “based on a true story” but you’re not sure how many liberties were actually taken.
I’ll write you off line a little more about it if you’re interested. I also might write a brief post about it fairly soon depending how much time I have and if I can stay on schedule.

I really appreciate all your support for my project, Alison. You are such an awesome friend!!

P.S. When are YOU starting YOUR book, missy????
P.P.S. How did you like the quote? Funny, huh! :P

“2. To be the most productive while I’m writing, I need to shut off email, Twitter, and internet access.”

Oh, you are telling me EXACTLY what I need to hear. I really need to get a handle on getting offline. It’s strange when I think about it because I never used to leave my email open all day until I opened a gmail account. That auto refresh was a revelation AND a huge potential time suck.

I’ll buckle down too, I swear!

You can do it, Hayden, stop the email addiction! (jk)

I totally know what you mean, though. When I was in the corporate world, I had to only turn on my Outlook (email) in the morning, check it a noon, and at the end of my day. Constantly checking email is such a time-waster!

Great to see you again, Hayden!

Great posting; I really loved your emphasis about the joy of writing. Lately, I’ve looked at writing as drudgery, but you’ve helped me stay grounded and realize that there is joy in writing.

CONGRATS on staying focused and on target for NaNoWriMo; I’ll try to do it next year….

      November 13, 2009 | 2:14 pm

      Hi Beth! How are you??
Sorry writing has seemed to be drudgery lately. I’m sure this seems fun to me because I’m choosing to do it and no one is expecting me to participate! ;)

NaNoWriMo is fun, but be sure you’re doing it for the right reasons. Feel free to email me prior to next year’s contest. I’d be happy to give you tons of support or at least be your writing buddy. :)

    Hi Lori!
I’m just riveted to your blog – this writing experiment – the progress, or not – your observations – all of it!

The best advice anyone ever gave me about writing was to write THRU the pain. But don’t have a guilt attack that you took a day off either. You need that to re-charge! And go ahead, scream, kick and do whatever – it’s all part of the process!

    Hugs of support!

      Hi Suzen!
I loved your Vet’s Day post, by the way!! Thank you for writing it – it must have been difficult.

Thanks for your advice, Suzen! You are sooo right! You’re on point with everything you said. I’ve learned so much already – can I be done now? (ha)

Thanks for your kindness about my blog, too. My husband is the one who suggested I write posts about my progress. I was thinking no one would give a hoot about my feelings about my writing experiment. So, your comment really means a lot to me. Thank you!
Hugs to you and thanks for reading about my shenanigans. :P

    Hi Lori,

Yay on becoming a writing machine! WOO HOO! :)

I loved that you listed what you learned. When I write, I tune everything out…even my husband. He can tell me all kinds of stuff and I just do not hear it. Fortunately, he has not taken advantage of it because he truly could ask me anything and it is like the teacher in Charlie Brown cartoons…wah wah wah wah! :)

Keep having fun and I look forward to the next progress report and to seeing the final product. You go, girl! :)

      Hi Nadia!
That’s so funny, wah wah wah…

I wish I could tune out everything when I’m writing. I find I am incredibly distracted – part of this is because of my wacked out nervous system, actually (effin MS!!).

Thanks for your kind words here, Nadia. You’re an amazing woman.

No 2 and no. 3 speak to me and then when I hit the Ben and Jerry’s comment I felt at home except my entire case would be gone.

I went to dinner with a friend last night and he said his son was writing a futuristic novel and already has a publisher interested. I think that’s so cool. Plus he has 3 kids and lives in Italy as a CIA agent. I guess that means there’s no excuse for me!

That’s so great you’re still on track, Lori, even after a not-so-good day. I feel for you! I’m sure you’re doing great though, and I think in the end you’ll be pleased with the discipline you learned by taking part. Keep it up!

And, remember that you’re the one who told me about all this, so I thank you for letting me know!

Actually, I think that’s the #1 thing I’ve learned from this so far: discipline. You’re right on point with your comment.
Take care, Suzannah! I hope your “project” is going well, too. Please let me know, when you can, how you’re doing.
