As you all know, I host a weekend series here at Jane Be Nimble called Front Porch with a focus on people’s stories (spanning comedy to tragedy)—to steep us in the human experience. Many of life’s best stories are told on front porches, in break rooms, and in back yards; that’s what Front Porch is all about.
The people on my Front Porch aren’t necessarily bloggers—anyone can be featured on the Front Porch. If you want to join me on the Front Porch, drop me a line (Contact Me) and let’s talk! Read the introductory post about this series here. Make sure you don’t miss the next installment of Front Porch—sign up for the free issue delivered via RSS or email.

Today, it’s my honor to welcome a dear friend to my Front Porch, Jay Schryer. Jay also runs a rocking blog, Porsidan. Go there and subscribe, right now. I’m serious. Just do it. I promise you’ll love him and his blog immediately.
Three things that I really love about Jay:
1. His writing prowess (read this)
2. His huge heart (read his guest post)
3. His stories (read this)
Also, here’s a fair warning that I’m a bit over in length today—I usually try to keep my posts under 1,000 words and I’m a bit over today. You may want to come back when you have more time to laugh out loud and partake of this special time with Jay.
It’s time to plop down on the porch swing with Jay and me, sway back and forth, and sink into the rhythm of the music that flows from Master Jay.
![]()
Jay started swinging…
…and tapping a rhythm with his fingers on the porch swing—head nodding to the beat—as I poured us a tall glasses of good ‘ole southern-style sweet tea (just like he likes it). During mid-afternoon on a warm, sunny autumn day, a couple of interested ravens hung out on a nearby tree. It’s really true—everyone likes Jay, even the birds.
If you know Jay, you know that his soul is deeply rooted in music.
Big time.
In fact, he has used music lyrics to rescue me from very gloomy days from my uninvited guest, Ms. MS. When I mention to Jay how much I appreciate his ability to infuse music into his social interactions—to brighten people’s moods, he brings up this story…
“One time, when I was playing in a band…
…this one girl was having a bad night. (The girls were our biggest fans!) So to cheer her up, we let her put make-up on us and we practiced like we were a glam band. That story was funny when it happened, but I think it would work better if I shared a picture…”
Let me stop you there. Hey, no thanks, Jay, really, you might want to keep that one to yourself. (ha ha ha)
But, speaking of that, were these girls your groupies? Or were they people you already knew or were friends with?
“The girl having the bad night was a very close friend of mine. Almost like my baby sister. I had been friends with her older brother, and when he died (my junior year in high school), I looked after her like she was my own sister. Her older sister is my very best friend in the world. This was when I was in the band, so after high school but before my daughter, Kyrie, was born, so I was maybe 19 or 20 years old.”
“All of the guys in the band really liked her, mainly because she liked us, and liked to hang out and listen to us play. So when she had the bad night, we all felt bad for her, and wanted to cheer her up. I can’t remember what had happened now…maybe her boyfriend had broken up with her or something. She was seven years younger than me, so barely a teenager when this all happened.”
OK, I just have to ask, did you use her makeup or yours?
“Ha ha ha ha…good one, we used her makeup (goofball!).”
Speaking of me being goofball (you pretty much got that right, Jay!), you mentioned to me recently you did something really goofy in high school once, something about a tire and scaring the crap out of your buddies? Lay that one on me, Jay.
“Oh yeah, that’s right. The tire story!”
“At my high school graduation party, we built a fire out in the woods—we were far, far out in the woods, all by ourselves. It was burning low, and so I got the bright idea to put my spare tire from my car on it.”
“It exploded.”
“This scared the crap out of all of us!”
“And it temporarily deafened all of us, which scared us even more. We didn’t hear ringing, just all the sounds were severely muffled.”
Ha ha ha ha! You know, Jay, when I was about eight-years old one summer on the farm, my brother soldered together a make-shift gun in the shop, put a firecracker in it, pointed it at me, and lit it.
That sucker blew like crazy and my left ear started ringing—this awful a high-pitched hiss—and I couldn’t hear out of it for a week. Never mind the fact that it singed off a huge patch of my hair! My brothers were jerks when we were kids! But, I sure have a lot of funny stories about the goofy stuff we did.
Back to your story, what happened after the explosion and you realized you couldn’t hear very well?
“We decided to go to sleep after that… even we felt like we had had too much to drink after that!”
Nice, Jay, why do I have a feeling that you were just trying to get attention? I mean, c’mon, throwing a tire on a fire??? What a goofball (but effin funny, I might add!!!). Did you have pay-attention-to-me issues from growing up? I know I sure did, being the youngest of us four kids.
“Well, this doesn’t affect me now as a grown-up, the attention thing, but my older brother, Michael, who is eight years older than me, tended to ignore me. Well, that and taunt me. He was significantly taller than me, and much more athletic, so he could climb trees easily, and roofs, and other places that I couldn’t.”
“So one of his favorite games was to take some acorns, climb a tree, and then pelt me with them as I walked underneath. Another thing he liked to do was to hit the back of my head, and then run away, since I couldn’t catch him. He also liked to take my books and toys and things and hide them up in trees or on the roof so I couldn’t get them.”
(I’m laughing my ass off…!)
“When I was about seven or eight years old, I went to the cattle auction with my dad…”
“It dawned on me that this (meaning the cattle auction) was how our farm made money.”
“We had cows, and the cows had babies. We kept some of the babies, and sold the rest to make money. We sold the cows we didn’t want….we sold the cows we didn’t want….we sold…what…we…didn’t want…hmmm. A light bulb went off: Hey Dad! Can we sell Michael?”
“Still, Michael wasn’t all bad. He taught me how to fish, how to hunt, and a lot about wilderness survival. Once when I was 4 or 5, I fell through some ice on our lake, and he fished me out and ran me back up to the house. He also saved me from a fire-ant bed one time.”
And that, my friends, is the common element uniting bands, explosions, and cattle auctions—the talented and hilarious Jay Schryer!
Thanks for joining us on the Front Porch, everyone! Stick around, pour yourself a glass of love, and join the conversation in the comments.
What’s the funniest or most shocking thing you did as a kid or a teenager?
Create a great day!

Hey Lori,
Thanks for having me over here on the Front porch! I really enjoyed our little chat. We sure had some good laughs, didn’t we? I can’t wait to have you over at Porsidan sometime, so we can laugh some more!

The thanks is all mine, Jay. You are one funny dude!! I was laughing out loud so many times while putting this together.
You are an amazing man, Jay, thanks for taking time out for me and sharing more stories – and photos, too! I really appreciate it and had a blast. I hope you did, too.
Plus, now I know what Sweet Tea is!

OMG!!! I love this story!!! I can’t get over how much I’m learning about Jay this week… first HIS post, then Danielle, and now this. Now this one is the cream of the crop because of the oh-so-awesome pics of young Jay!!! Yeee-haaawww!!
You really don’t know a person until you’ve seen what they looked like back in the day.
Hmm… I’ll have to think about my shocking teenager stories (that are decent enough to print). Let me get back to you on that…
Isn’t Jay such a cutie pie! I just melted when I saw his little cutie pie boy photo. Awww!
I’m glad you liked the story, Lisis. I laughed out loud so many times when I was working with Jay on the story. I think the story was more for me than it was for him!
I’ll be waiting here with open arms here in the comments when you can drum up your teen-age story. From you, Lisis, I know it will be a hoot!
lol, I’m glad you liked the story, and the pictures. I’m not sure what happened, but I sure USED to be cute, eh?

Jay, thanks so much for sharing with us on the Front Porch! I was grinning all the way through, having had my own experiences with glam rock, bonfires (though no exploding tires) and cattle auctions….
Is it weird that I can relate to all three…? Hm, maybe I don’t want to think about that too hard.
Shocking teenage stories? Well, of course I was the perfect child, so never got into trouble or anything…. Ahem.
Seriously, all of the medications over the past year must have dulled the memory cells, as the only thing I can think of was winding up in the high school principal’s office because I was walking down the hallways with an iguana on my shoulder, and some girl spotted it and fainted….
Silly girl.

I know what you mean, Gazye, I can relate to most of his stories, too! But, really, it’s like that with almost all stories I hear on the Front Porch. You know? All of us share the human experience – and we each just experience some flavor of the same stew of life.
Yeah, right (ahem), I’m sure you never got into trouble!
And an iguana on your shoulder, Gazye? Holy schnikes! That is the utmost of excellent!
Thanks for sharing!
I was looking at your blog, and it’s not shocking that there are so many simlarities at all. My dad was an Animal Sciences major back in the day, too. So I suppose there’s just something about farm people, eh?
That iguana story is HILARIOUS!!!

Thanks!
He was a really pretty thing, actually … a brilliant lime green color. His name was Serbia, and my friends and I were lizard-sitting — he belonged to a classmate who’d had to go on an extended vacation.
It seems I always had some kind of animal on my person in high school … a baby oppossum I carried around in the bib of my overalls, baby guinea pigs in the sleeves of my shirt. The iguana’s the only one that ever got a negative reaction from the passers-by, though.

Hi Lori and Jay!
You two rocked the porch today! LOL! What funny stories! I only wish I could remember some of my own. Being an only child in a rural farm area sixty years ago – hmmmm. I did once try to put a saddle on our bull. I don’t recommend this! I taught my mother to drive a stick shift when I was 11 (I’d mastered the tractor) and while I know I would not recommend this either, we did laugh a lot – until she wiped out our front porch. I became her chauffeur after that happened.

Holy smokes, Suzen, your Mom took out your front porch!!?!!
WOW! If I did that, I’d never live it down!
(But I have to admit, it’s kind of funny!)
We had a manure spreader I learned to drive – I always wanted to drive it downtown (where all the teenagers dragged – to pick up dates) and turn it on so it would start dishing out our cattle manure. Those kids drove me nuts (spoiled brats!). ha
I was a bitter/angry little kid, I think, – but never actually took the manure spreader downtown.
Great to see you here, Suzen.
You know, I tried the saddle on the bull thing too…You’re right. It’s definitely something people should NOT try!!!! Thanks for stopping by, I’m glad you liked my stories!

Ok, Jay, adorable much??? You must have had to fight the girls off with one of those glam laser lights!
Pure awesome.
Hayden Tompkins´s last blog ..10 Ways to Get Your Winter Awesome On!
LOL, why thank you! That was one of my senior portraits in High School. I remember taking my guitar to school that day, and the photographer wanted to know if I could really play it, or if it was just for looks. Silly woman!
But anyway, the lights, alas, were added after the photo was taken. Nobody ever saw them in real life.

Ha ha ha ha ha!!!!
Hayden, you have me laughing out loud again!!! (“…adorable much?”)
You’re a funny woman!

Holy “cow” Jay, have you had some serious adventures or what? It’s not every day you read a post that includes glam rock bands, tyre explosions and cattle auctions. Should be more of it I say!
And Lori, re the firecracker in a gun caused loss of hearing (and hair), WTF?! How is it possible you survived your childhood girl?
lol, Yes, I try to make my life as adventurous as possible. If that means glam bands, exploding tires, and cattle auctions, then so be it! As the saying goes, if you can’t be an example for others, at least let your life be a warning. My life is one heck of a warning!
As for the lightsabres, sadly, that wasn’t an option. oh how I wish, though!
Jay Schryer´s last blog ..Paying It Forward
Sami, you’re soooo quick (re: “Holy ‘cow’ Jay,”)!! How DO YOU DO IT!!!
Yeah, Jay is quite a trip! What a fun guy! I wish I lived closer to him – well, er…and you, too! Let’s all just start a commune. (Sound good?)
And, about the firecracker gun – my brother was much more interested in blowing things up (including me) than about anything else. So, I try not to hold it against him. Hey, whatever brings people happiness – that doesn’t end up killing me – is fine by me. (ha!!) What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, right?
Thanks for coming to the ‘Porch today!
PS. Jedi Jay, did you use light sabres for the glam rock lighting effect? Niiiiiice.
P.P.S. In case it’s not clear, light sabers aren’t necessary to control JBN’s alien populations – so, no, your priestess services aren’t needed at the moment.
Ha ha…great story Jay and Lori…I’m trying to picture all the glam imagery! One funny thing I remember from my teen years…was getting together with my buddy and we’d yell stuff out of my bedroom window and then watch the people try to figure out who yelled that…it was hilarious. I realize this was a silly practical joke, but at the time, it had us laughing.
Thanks for sharing another cool story on your back porch!
Tim´s last blog ..Getting to the Point…Pecha Kucha Style
Really, it’s better if you *don’t* try to picture all the glam imagery. It’ll just hurt your head.
I know it hurts mine to remember all the crazy stuff we did back then…
Jay Schryer´s last blog ..Paying It Forward
Awesome, Tim! I had a feeling you were the practical joker type – why is that?
Jay – believe me, it took a long time to erase the glam imagery from my mind, too!

Both of you guys ROCK in my book!
Jay and Lori,
This is funnny…it’s the sibling stuff that I can relate too. Oh and Jay the cute photo is just well…so…cute!
I guess the shocking thing Idid would be stealing a pizza freshman year. Nothing compared to a tire burning party in the woods. Kind of boring eh?

I agree with Jay – how the heck did you pull off pizza theft??
Tess, I think you’re now in hero status with Jay…
Seriously, I’d like to know HOW, ’cause I’m thinking of trying that later today!
Lori/Jay
Now all of that just sounds like WAY too much fun. It’s wonderful that you’ve got so many great memories from your childhood.
I’ve had a few myself, and I would relate them here except the folks over at Juvy have ordered the documents sealed. Dang.

lol, documents sealed by juvy, eh? That means that (apparently) you had WAY more fun than I did! Or maybe I was just better at avoiding capture!

I love it the fact that I’ve unearthed two rebels here at JBN. I’ve always had a *thing* for rebels. Maybe that’s why I had to join the military – to feel more at home?
Nah – joking – but, in all seriousness, you two rock the house. I’m you both have avoided further detention. I like having you around!
Have a great weekend!

Aw, he definitely was cute! Glad they didn’t go for the scary Kiss style makeup.
Do all teens like to push the envelope? I suppose so. We used to be delighted if we could get the bus to the movies for a kiddie fare even though we were over 14 then blag our way into a movie for 18 years and over even though we were only 15. Sounds pretty lame not but at the time it was exciting stuff. Can’t remember what naughty movie we saw but I think it may have been called Porkies. Ewwwww!
Oh no, please don’t tell me you saw Porkies!! Double ewwww! Ha ha ha
Yeah, I don’t know how any of us teenagers survive. I can’t believe I survived my teens either – I was a bit of a wild one.
Maybe that’s made me a bit more well-adjusted later in life, though? (Er, uh, maybe that could be argued, too!)
Thanks for stoppin’ by, Annabel! Great to see you.
Hi Jay and Lori, what a fun story and exchange between the two of you! I loved it! It brought back a lot of the innocent and not so innocent fun I had growing up, with friends and with my siblings. Thanks for sharing this. I love Lori’s front porch!
Cheers,

Miche

I’m glad you enjoyed this, Miche, it was a load of fun! That Jay is soo funny and had such great stories! These are the stories I just live for, Miche!
Thanks for saying what you said here today. It means a lot to me that there are others out that love a good story just as much as me. I’ll keep going as long as there are people who enjoy it.
Keep rockin the internet, Miche!
