Front Porch: Only in Lance World

RSSI host a weekend series here at Jane Be Nimble called Front Porch with a focus on people’s stories, spanning comedy to tragedy, to steep us in the human experience. Many of life’s best stories are told on front porches, in break rooms, and in back yards; that’s what Front Porch is all about.

Read the introductory post about this series here. Make sure you don’t miss the next installment of Front Porch—sign up for free delivery via RSS or into you email in box.

I love a good laugh.

I’ve come to know Lance over the past year, and he’s told me some awesome stories. I mean, some really wacky stuff! The last I heard from Lance, he mentioned something about a hurricane while visiting Disney World, and I knew I had to ask him to hang out on my Front Porch to explain this gem.

This is the epitome of what the Front Porch seeks to convey—just a story. It’s friends sharing bits and pieces of their lives like the mortar holding together the bricks of humanity.

After you’ve joined us on the Porch, please visit and subscribe to Lance’s blog if you haven’t already. Simply said, Lance is the Lighthouse whose light shines so brightly to all.

As Lance gets comfy on the bean bags I keep on my front porch, I ask him to remove his pink wig—I can’t stop laughing long enough to focus on his story!!!

OK, Lance, what’s your favorite drink? You know I always pour something for the Front Porch to help steep us in the moment.

“I’ll take a chocolate milk! It’s a favorite here in Wisconsin! And a cookie, do you have cookies, Lori?”

Lance, Lance, Lance, why is it that you have this thing, this knack to know how to make me laugh out loud? When you mentioned, out of the blue the other day that you ended up in a hurricane in Disney World, I thought, of course, only Lance would do that, and have fun during the entire process!

“Yeah, the funny thing is that we had decided to take this trip from Wisconsin, where we live, down to Disney World. This was about four or five years ago, right around the time of Katrina. And, I should say up front that the hurricane (hurricane Wilma) wasn’t near the force as Katrina.”

Oh, I see, it was one of the side storms during that time. I’m glad no one was hurt.

“That’s right—we’re all OK. I think what made our trip so funny was the way it all worked out in the end. We had decided that we would tent camp as opposed to staying at one of the local hotels.”

Holy smokes, Lance, you have to be kidding me! That’s awesome! What kind of camp was it, like, outback woods?

“Oh no, not at all. This was serious Disney camping. I mean, the campground was huge, and there were even game rooms, pools, and other entertainment available for all the kids. It was amazing—like nothing I’ve seen, it even had it’s own bus system to navigate the campground.

“The worst was that it was HOT! I mean, sweltering hot. This is Florida in October, and it was humid and nearly 90 degrees during the day, and only got down to about 80 degrees at night.

“Before we left on the trip, I had this brilliant idea. I think it was the engineer in me shining through! I could bring an old window air conditioner with, and trick it out by removing all the exterior stuff so all that was really left was the cooling part and motor. I ended up laying this hotrod on an igloo cooler outside one of the tent windows, plugged it into the electrical outlet at our site, opened up that window flap, and BINGO! Our tent really cooled off! I’m sure this was the world’s most inefficient use of electricity and air conditioning! Oh…the looks we had from fellow campers! I’m sure it was jealousy at this masterpiece! It couldn’t have been the way it looked, could it???

“There was one slight problem. My wife, Lora, had accommodated to the pleasant temperature, and in the middle of the night had to make a trip to the outdoor ‘facility.’ So, she put on a sweatshirt and sweat pants and headed out. By the time she made it back to the tent, she was pouring sweat.”

Nice, Lance, awesome visual there. Nothing like a sweaty night out on a campground in October! Ha ha ha!
At least you had the tent nice and cool when she got back!

“Yeah, I know. But there’s more. You see, the whole point of the camping exercise was that hotels were actually fairly pricey for a family of five. Plus, most hotels had a maximum occupancy of four people.”

Shoot, really? So I supposed hotels do this so that a family will have to reserve more than one room, right?

“I’m not sure, but one thing I DO know is that the campground was much less expensive. The problem with the campground was that when news came of the hurricane, after our first night there, we had to evacuate the campground!”

Oh, that’s right!! They can’t just leave all of you out there! What happened???

“Like I said, the campground was huge, so there were huge lines of people waiting to sign out of the campground and then it just multiplied again when we were sent to the hotel that was accepting all of us wacky campers. I mean, the lines were huge—it took all day to navigate leaving the campground and then to wait again for a room. What was even more crazy, is that the same hotel who had a maximum occupancy of four was relaxing their rules, so we got a room for the five of us, which included a roll-out bed.”

If you were in line all day, how did your kids occupy their time? Mad Libs (does anyone play Mad Libs anymore)? License plate games? You’re at Disney World after all, did you all go nuts?

“No, actually, the kids mostly just rested in the car, made faces at each other, and then when we were waiting to check into the hotel, Lora took the kids to the park. Disney World was closed the next day because of Wilma.”

That’s amazing, Lance, you always find a way to accommodate and enjoy, somehow. That’s awesome!

“Yeah, thanks, we try. But you know, I think it was so ironic that, in the end, we stayed in the nice hotel the remainder of the trip for the campground rate. The hotel really took care of us. It all worked out in the end.”

I think it’s cool that your kids were happy to stay in the campground initially, I mean, that’s great. No whining and complaining, they were just going with the flow—even in the wake of the hurricane commotion.

“Back then, yeah, they were pretty OK with staying in the campground—there were pools and game rooms, after all. But today, I’m not sure it’d be the same story. Ha ha ha”

This is a great story, Lance. It brings back a lot of memories for me, too, of camping, crazy storms, and goofy situations. Thank for sharing it with me here on the Front Porch!

To all you reading along, climb up on the Porch and join in! What crazy storm did you weather (no pun intended) and what unsuspected things came out of it?

Create a great day!

    Lori,
It’s great to be here with you, on your front porch, today. Thanks so much for having me…and sharing one of the better pictures that have been taken of me (how scary is that!!).

      Hi Lance!
Thanks sooo much for all the time you took with me to spend time on my Front Porch. I’m so sorry that I’ve been away until now – but I’ve been thinking about you!

Thanks for letting me post this photo of you, too, Lance. It just goes to show how wacky you can get when you let loose! I love it!!

Thanks, again, for sharing your story with us for enjoying your chocolate milk! Now, go take care of that milk mustache.

This is awesome! Lance, I love how nothing gets in your way. Hotels too expensive? We’ll just camp. Too hot? We’ll bring an air conditioner. Not even a hurricane could stop Team Lance from having a blast! You, my friend, are definitely one of my heroes!

Lori – Awesome addition to the Front Porch collection! You rock!

      Hey Jay!
That air conditioner contraption still gets used, even here in Wisconsin (for those two weeks a year that it’s super hot!). We set it up by our pop up camper on hot camping trips – it’s “redneck” all the way – including a laundry vent pipe held in place by a coat hanger to get the cool air up to the window. For some reason, the word ‘hero’ or ‘genius’ isn’t what my wife used when she saw this setup!! And we HAD to stick it out through the hurricane – those Disney tickets are cheap, and we had already bought them….

Hero? Jay, you are all sorts of awesome!! And a hero in my book too!

Yeah, I agree. The Lance edition to the Front Porch was a fun one, indeed! And, wow, joining the ranks of my other guests, this series is quickly becoming one of my favorite writing gigs!

    Ha Lance!
I can so totally see you you guys out there, smiling amidst the chaos and shouting, upset people. Those situations always make me think of ’survival of the fittest’. The others trample themselves to death, and Lance and co survive sitting on a pile of tents and a DIY airco :-) Ha!
This made me smile. Love your stories. Hope you will write them all down one day – would make a great book of short stories.
Are you done reading ‘If you want to write’ yet?
Take care and have a wonderful weekend.

      Hi Mimi!
Well, that day we were evacuees was definitely a trying day…although in the end, it all worked out wonderfully. And Disney too great care of us – I was most impressed with them, and how they really do care.

The air conditioner – definitely DIY!! I’m sure it gave our family a reputation that week (let’s just say…I’m sure you won’t ever see us on a Disney brochure!).

And it’s moments like these that also make great memories.

The book: I’m loving it, although – no, I’m not finished with it yet. The idea that’s really sitting with me right now is the idea of being a lion, a pirate – being a bit reckless – when we write. It’s a very freeing thought for me. Thanks again Mimi!!

Hi Lori! Hi Lance! Oh this great :-) I love front porch stories. Lance, I am not surprised in the least. I have a feeling you tore Disney up as soon as you could get in and that every hotel guest was entertained by your pink wing and big smile. It’s a little scary braving a hurricane. I bet you took their mind off of it, not to mention your family.

I was in a hurricane in Orlando as well. Hurricane Charlie. My uncle was an amputee diabetic. We had two girls under age 10 with us. I had the hotel room with the girls. We had a blast despite the storm. I will never forget that trip. No lines the next day (we went to Universal Studios).

Loved your front porch Lori! Happy Saturday everyone.

      Hey Angelia!
Front porch stories are GREAT – they just “are”.

Well…I didn’t take that pink wig to Disney. I did dress up, though! We were there over Halloween, so one evening we all dressed up. My wife and I went as pirates (scary, huh!). Not as scary as me in that pink wig, though!

And very cool – it’s all about making the best of whatever situation we’re in. And you sure sound like you did that, too!! Awesome! And no lines – an extra bonus!! We actually had longer lines after the hurricane passed through. A lot of schools in south Florida were closed, so lots of families came up for a day or two to Disney. Still a ton of fun, though! And those parks are so clean! A very fun time, even with everything that happened.

Wow, an A/C engineer too! Is there no end to the wonders of our Lance??? That invention is just genius!

Madlibs?? Play them too much. I remember one line in one we did about Kelly, an escaped “donut-pilfering felon who was last seen wearing a yellow bicycle and carrying a brown bikini.” Some of those funny lines just stick with you forever!

Me and storms?? In college a massive massive snow storm had closed everything, so my then-boyfriend and I went walking in it. To our delight we found the “Rolling Keg” pub open. Perfect day!

      Hi Jannie!
An A/C Engineer – now, I LIKE the sound of that! Guess what? No one called me that as I was attempting to fit this beast into the back of our minivan…or as I was setting it up with strange looks from passerby campers! I’ll have to put this one on my resume! Pretty soon, you’ll see a whole line of these babies coming out!

And madlibs? Jannie, are you sure this just wasn’t a line from your earlier life? Well…except for the felon part…there’s no way you are a felon. I’m sure you’d share those donuts, anyway. Hmmm…I’m getting hungry, for some reason. Jannie???

So, you went out into the snowstorm…and then helped the local pub. See, that’s you just being a good citizen!

And how about that, you managed to talk beer and donuts in your comment…why am I not surprised!

      Perfect!

Have a super awesome day madlibbing, or eating donuts, or hanging out at the local pub…or whatever else is on your plate this fine day! Woohoo!!

How funny that you remembered, ““donut-pilfering felon who was last seen wearing a yellow bicycle and carrying a brown bikini.”

I LOVE Mad Libs, but haven’t played them in ages, I need to get my hands on a book and get going! Or, maybe I’ll make up my own?

Sounds like your excursion during the storm was my kind of outing!!! ha ha

    Lance,
I think you can call Steven Speilberg and get a movie made from this story. Parts are hilarious.

ONE storm I weathered was when our kids were all young and we went camping in MI to the city where I was running my first road race. (10k) It was freezing, storming, raining etc.

I was in the crowd in my sweats and at the last minute I ran over and got Roger’s coat and put that on as well. So I’m running in the storm with wet clothes and a wet coat still freezing.
I was the last one to cross the finish line.

Great story Lance, I have a feeling you’ll never run out of them. Lori, I love the photo everyone needs a front porch!

A movie!! Okay, I just tried to call Steven Spielberg, operator assistance wouldn’t give me his number…I’ll keep working on that! This is a fun story to look back at…although I remember a couple of points while this was actually going on…that didn’t seem quite so hilarious at the time! Now, though, the whole thing seems pretty funny!

So, Roger’s a pretty nice guy, huh – giving you his coat and all! And from my few runs in the rain…I’m guessing the added water was also extra weight to carry with you too. Hey, you finished, though! And that right there is all sorts of awesome!!

Lori, thanks for sharing this story. Too funny!

Lance, I’m still laughing (with you, I’m sure) at this story.

We lived in the Mississippi Gulf when those hurricanes were threatening everyone and I remember driving north toward Tennessee to stay with friends during Ivan (I think) and being stuck in a line of cars on the highway going 15 mph at most. My husband was in Japan so it was me and three kids. Talk about coming up with quick, in the car, games.

Eventually we started having conversations with other people on the road. “Pardon me, do you have gray poupon?” and “So what kind of dog is that?” It was hilarious and still today we remember that as being a fun time and not the tragedy of hurricane evacuation where you spent 15 hours driving a typical 5-6 hour trip.

Great story, I hope you have pictures of the AC in the tent. By the way, that’s something my husband would have done.

      YES! Laughing WITH me!!

And what a fun way for you to make a long stressful car ride much more fun! And look at the memories this has created, just because you did something that would normally seem unheard of. I think that’s completely awesome!

I don’t think we had any pictures of the AC by the tent – everything happened so fast with the evacuation. Well…until we were in line, and then it slowed right down!!

And maybe I should tell you the rest of the story… So, my wife agreed to taking the AC unit along, it got her thinking. And we also packed a microwave for easier campsite cooking. Picture us all setup around the firepit, with a microwave in the middle…roughing it at it’s best! For the record, that is the only time we’ve taken the microwave while camping…

Now THAT is the way to do a family Disney trip! Holy Smokes! Talk about adventure!! Orlando, and a few theme parks?! That’s for sissies. The way to do it is, wait for some hot, humid, hurricane weather, then plan to CAMP in it, so the kids will always remember their trip to Disney.

Nothing worse than spending a gazillion dollars on Disney tickets only to have the kids forget the entire trip within a couple of years! But you found a way around THAT little issue, didn’t you?

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat story, kids!! :)

    • Lance
      January 23, 2010 | 9:23 am

      Hi Lisis!
I’d love to say we planned it this way, and that we were ready to weather any storm. The truth, though, is that our kids have off from school in late October, and we planned the trip months in advance. Although, we did know there was a possibility for Hurricane Wilma to make landfall around the area while we were there. And it definitely made it memorable!

Maybe you are onto something! We should plan all our trips around weather “situations” just so we can make sure everyone remembers the whole trip – brilliant idea (i.e. Lisis YOU are brilliant!!)! In fact, I’m thinking I should open a travel agency, touting trips just like this for all the travelers out there! This is going to be BIG!!!

That’s the thing. It really is. Lisis, you nailed it: I absolutely remember the trips that something went wrong. One time, our family of 6 were driving west during a winter storm, and got caught/stuck in a teeny town (<500 people) with no hotel. We ended up staying in a church that was taking in people for the night.
Ooouuucccch!!! Those church pews are hard!

We ended up leaving the next morning, but we were all sore as all get out.

Well…had you seen the setup we had, I don’t think you would want me designing any sort of portable private restroom/shower! In fact, the way we were setup, having to leave the one window completely open (to let that cool air in!) – there was little privacy even inside our tent! Hey, we’ll never see these people around us again, though, right!

    Lance:

Ha ha…I really enjoyed this story…sounds like quite the adventure. I’m still trying to picture the air conditioner by the tent, but I trust that you had that covered pretty well. I could just imagine the looks that you guys were getting. Actually I’m starting to picture you as Clark Griswald and the Griswald family from the Vacation movies :)

Reminds me of the first time I went camping with a buddy of mine when we graduated college. We went down to southern Illinois near the Kentucky border and one night we had some pretty fierce storms. For a camping tenderfoot like I was, I was pretty freaked out. We ended up seeking shelter in the car. I know this is nothing like a hurricane, but it was very memorable for me.

So, we had that AC unit sitting on a cooler, right outside the tent window. The most inefficient use of AC ever, probably. Enough came in the tent, though, to make it downright cold! Outside…yep, it sure did have a Griswold feel to it!

And your story reminds me of a camping trip we had another time in Kentucky. Similar experience – lots of rain and we ended up in the back of our car to sleep. So – I know, bad weather (even just a lot of rain) can be a bit on the freaky side. Memories, indeed!!

And the vacation was a very awesome time – minus a few hours of moving from the campground to the hotel. And maybe deep down, I am related to that Griswald clan (it HAS come up more than once!!!). Hi Audra,
You hit the nail on the head (er, uh, the A/C into the tent??). Lance has a way of truly making lemonade out of lemons, and making cool tents out of hot ones.

I love the Griswald reference – you’re all making me laugh! (I really needed that!)

Hi Lori and Lance … love the front porch approach – just not now if you don’t mind .. kinda not very nice now, a bit wet, a bit cold and possibly more snow ..

That sounds fun – and well done for getting it cold – ahd you brought enough duvets to warm up during the night. Oh I hate queues .. does put me off things ..

Camping can be a questionable operation .. though I’ve had loads of fun – but without hurricanes, or floods thru the camp – I’m pleased to say ..

Enjoy the benign time and the weekend ..

      Hi Hilary!
Isn’t this front porch idea just swell!! I’m loving hanging out here today! And like you, Hilary, I wouldn’t want to hang out on a real front porch here…too cold, drizzly, damp, and dreary.

Our tent was downright freezing. We were all zipped up tight in our sleeping bags. It wasn’t until my wife wandered outside that we realized just how hot and humid it was out there.

And the hurricane just added to all the craziness of that week. The rest was all good though, and a whole lot of fun!

        Hi Hilary,
Thanks for hanging out with us on the Front Porch this weekend. SF is really cold, dreary, WET, and grey, too. Ugh – I’m dreaming about Hawaii today. For sure!

Oh, and I love my duvet and feather bed/blanket. I don’t think I could live without it! Er, uh, I guess I have lived in tents for very long periods of time before (in the military) so I’m sure I’d figure something out.

Enjoy what’s left of the weekend and create a great week!

Lance, that is so cool to hear you share your stories! I do love them so! ;) I love the a/c contraption you had set up for camping! That is so great, I’m smiling! I’m glad that you were kept safe and it all worked out in the end anyway. Did you still get to enjoy Disney world a bit also before coming home? It’s always great to read your blogs! ~Jenn

Well….the AC contraption (that’s a really good word for it!) definitely did it’s job! If this thing were graded on looks at all, though – yikes!!

Disney really took great care of us during the storm and through the rest of our stay. The parks were closed one day, and then opened back up after that. We still had about four days left after the hurricane, so we did get to really enjoy all the Disney parks. It was cool after the storm, though – and we froze until we picked up some sweatshirts! A very memorable trip!!

    Hi Lance and Lori,

That is a cool story. You got to stay in a nice hotel at a campground fee. Talk about things working out for the best! I also love how you created your own tent air conditioner. You are one creative dude! :)

As for a story about being in a storm, on our last day of living in India for six months, a monsoon hit. Now I had heard about monsoons but had never experienced one at all.

We saw the dark clouds approaching for about a half hour before it hit our little village. The clouds were the darkest I have ever seen. Kids were out playing in the dirt streets using a dirty plastic bag as a kite. They were laughing and having so much fun. It was a beautiful site because they were genuinely happy and they were just playing with a plastic bag.

Then the storm hit and our place flooded within seconds. The water just kept rising and rising. So we were running all around trying to prevent the water from rising any further so as to prevent any damage to the furniture.

I had never seen a storm like that in my life. It went on for twenty minutes.

When it was over, we managed to dry up the entire area and within a couple of hours, it was like nothing ever happened. It was a great memory on the last day of living in India.

      Hi Nadia!
The campground was really nice (and huge!) – being at the hotel was really nice, though. And the super part about Disney was that they let us continue to stay at the hotel even after the campground opened back up!

The AC “system” (sounds fancy, doesn’t it!) was really driven from my desire to sleep someplace comfortable. And this sure ended up being all of that – it just looked a bit “out there”!

Wow, your story, Nadia! What an experience – it’s hard to imagine that much rain coming at once! And I’m also really taken in by what “fun” is for these kids you saw – just an old plastic bag. Sometimes the best gifts are the simplest. I’m sure these kids probably didn’t have anything else, but I think it still also shows how fun is what you make it.

        Hi Nadia,
        Thanks for sharing your story!

The part about the kids playing with the plastic bags reminds me of a small part of the movie “American Beauty”. I realize the movie had NOTHING to do with your story, but there was a part about the beauty of a plastic bag just taking flight and floating in the wind. I have to agree that the sight of this, or even a floating dandelion, or such I also agree is beautiful!

What a harrowing story it sound like you experienced. Yiikes!!!

Thanks for sharing, Nadia. You’re a great storyteller! I’m glad you’re writing some of them down for us and sharing!
        Hope all is well!

A camping air conditioner? Now THAT’S something I gotta see. There’d be a market for those here for sure Lance. I think you’re on to something my friend.

Worst/best camping trip I’ve been involved in included one car on the back of a tow truck, another car overheating whilst 4 wheel driving along a beach at high tide and a third car not starting on accounts it was water logged by the torrential rain we camped through until our final day when the sun came out just in time for us to go home.

Ah, the joys of camping. Thanks for bringing back the memories Lance. Now where’s the number for that therapist?

    Lance,
This is hysterical, you “outjoyed” even Disney!!! I love that your family goes right along with your “plans”:)
As I was recuperating from surgery this week, I adamantly wanted to do so on my boat. In and out of sleep all day I noticed that the winds picked up, the rain pelted down, thunder and lightening storms were above me, the hugh surf pounded the boat. My mind registered there was some kind of extreme weather, but I was content to sleep as the boat pitched and rocked. Sleep is a comoodity in my house:) I had a few visitors and many calls and not one of them mnetioned that there was a tornado warning; I woke the next morning to find a tornado actually touched down 15 minutes away! When I asked them all why not one person thought to warn me they all said they thought it was quite obvious and I would know! Pain medication blurred my logic:)
Not nearly as fun as your story, but in my own way I weathered two storms last week:)

      Hi Joy!
“Outjoyed Disney” – I love that!!! I’m not exactly sure that was our thought as we were going through all of this, though! Looking back, it’s so much easier to laugh about it all!

I hope you are doing better, and are recovering. Sounds like it was rough on the boat (does that slow down recovery at all??). And wow! A tornado that close! Scary! Or maybe not so scary if you don’t know about it. Maybe that’s part of that “ignorance is bliss” concept!

    Hey Lance,

O kindred soul. My only trip to Disney World was interrupted by a hurricane a number of years ago. While my story pales in comparison to yours, there were some great moments. For Example, as the news reports heated up, you could sense a buzz in the community as folks started clearing out the shelves in the local groceries. My wife at the time and I looked at each other and said, “Holy crap. We better stock up!” Grabbed two cases of beer instead of one and headed out the door! Later that night we asked our waiter at the restaurant what he thought of the approaching storm. His response?

“I ain’t scared of nuthin named “Floyd’.

    Cheers Lance

And, I was laughing when I read that you were with it enough to stock up. Then I read what you stocked up with, and laughed even harder. You are FUNNY! (I’ll hang out with you any day during a storm! I’ll bring the pistachios!)

I like your idea about the electric blanket, Wilma. I’m going camping with YOU next time!

Since you asked about these stories (that’s a great question!) – I’ll answer the best I can. I try not to force them and just email a bit with people and “listen” for things I find interesting and a bit odd, wacky, goofy, or otherwise. You know?

If something comes across that I would normally talk about (or persue) on my own Front Porch, I kindly ask if I can write about them and publish them here.

That’s it! It’s really fun – I love to write them. I feel it brings out the story teller in me – and deep down, I think I always wanted to be one. How am I doing? ;)

I can’t picture you bitter, anyway! Were you one of those who came to Disney the day after the storm?? Maybe we saw you too! I’m waving (…well…a few years late!!).
