Front Porch: Life Through Mia’s Eyes

An Ant's View

In January, I visited a wonderful blog that I quite enjoy called Writer Dad and was surprised by finding the most amazing young woman. It happened that Mia, the daughter of the mastermind and author of Writer Dad, Sean, was guest posting that day. I was in for a treat!

At that post, she let us know that she was turning eight years old in January this year. Her writing engaged me immediately and as I traveled through her post, her joye de vivre was contagious, not to mention her interaction in the comments!

Here’s an excerpt from her post:

I love going to school. Reading is my favorite subject in the whole world. In fact, one time I read 10 chapter books in one day! I also really like writing and learning Spanish, but I don’t like math as much. I’m working hard to learn all my math facts so that math will be more fun!

(She even made up her own joke, which I thought quite funny—check out the comments in her post for a belly laugh.)

I sent her and her dad an email inviting her to join me on the Front Porch to chat with all of us. And, thankfully, she accepted with grace. (Thank you, Mia.)

I explained that the mission of the Front Porch series is to share people’s stories. It’s a place to share conversations had on front porches or in back yards, just sharing life and steeping ourselves in humanity.

She was all for it. (There’s that joye de vivre, again!)

So, she’s joining us here today. Welcome, Mia!

Are you ready?

Let’s go!

We’re easing into it, letting the words flow out gently like a bubbling brook, and I’m already enjoying every moment.

OK, Mia, one of the first things I normally do on the Front Porch is get comfy. What do you like to drink if you’re having friends over to your house? Milk? Hot chocolate? I used to love drinking cherry Kool-Aid. (And usually ended up with a red lip from the dye—not to mention a couple of cavities!) ha ha ha

“I like to drink icy water because water is good for me and because it is usually hot on my porch.”

Awesome! And that’s good for tennis and soccer players. I saw over at Writer Dad that you like to play both sports. Good for you!

I also noticed in your post over at Writer Dad that you are looking forward to getting a computer someday and you LOVE reading! What are your thoughts about all this talk about digital readers vs. reading real books? For example, I have a Kindle reader, but I also love to read REAL paper books. I don’t like to read very much using my computer (it kind of make my eyes hurt). Do you think you’ll read books on your computer or a digital reader more often than paper books someday? Or, even, that paper books will someday no longer exist?

“I still want them to have paper books in the future because I can read better on paper and my eyes won’t get tired. I do think the iPad looks neat though. My dad showed it to me on the computer.”

Exactly! I agree with your thoughts about paper books AND the iPad. Maybe you’ll be able to get an iPad someday—I know you just had a birthday, happy belated birthday! Now that you’re eight years old, what’s different about your life? Anything?

“Now that I’m eight years old I can read a lot better and a lot faster. I can also stay up later before I get really sleepy and I get bigger kisses from my parents!”

Believe it or not, I can actually remember when I was learning to read, and how lucky I felt that I could start to read things like cartoons in the newspaper with my dad or even the occasional menu at a restaurant—even though we really only went to McDonald’s back then. Ha ha ha And yeah, staying up later means a lot more time to have fun, read, and learn new things during the day! Yippee!

I can tell from your post and comments that you’re quite a funny chicka, Mia. You even created your own joke—that’s really great (Tiramisu! ha ha ha). Is there a time you can think of that was really, really funny. You know, the kind of story that was so funny you couldn’t stop laughing?

“When me and my friend Brittany were taking pictures I was sitting on a tree and I said, ‘There are ants on my butt!’”

Ha ha ha, did Brittany start laughing and did she make the photos blurry from laughing too much? Ha ha ha, that’s funny, Mia!

“No, Brittany wasn’t laughing too much. It was mostly just me and my brother (he’s kinda loco!).”

I can remember being fascinated by ants when I was younger, actually. I even remember watching an ant crawl on a blade of grass wondering how it could possibly NOT feel lost all the time. You know? How would she find her way back home? But they all do.

“I had a dream one time when I was only as tiny as an ant and everything was really giant. It was kind of cool and kind of crazy.”

Yeah, dreams can be pretty crazy; you hit the nail on the head! Just remember that dreams can sometimes make for great stories. I’ve written a couple of stories based on my dreams, and that’s why I keep a notebook by my bed, just in case I get an idea for a story from my dreams—that way I can write it down as soon as I wake up.

Well, lovely lady, thanks for taking time to hang out with me and the amazing people who read Jane Be Nimble. You are awesome!

I’ll be watching for more of your posts over at Writer Dad!

Mia, please feel free to chime in at the comments if you have time, and to everyone who stops by please leave a comment for Mia or myself if you’d like. Put up your feet and let’s hang out on the Front Porch!

Create a great day!

I’m so proud of you. I love how hard you are always willing to try and the smile you put behind everything you do. You are warm, generous and wonderfully funny. I love who you are and who you are slowly becoming. Thanks for being the best daughter I could ever hope to have!

    Hi Mia,

It’s nice to see you over at Lori’s front porch!

I think it’s wonderful that you like to read so much. My daughter is six and she says she loves to read because books teach you things. Because I work at a Library she gets to go choose books a lot. She always has a good time and it makes me proud.

    Congratulations on your guest post.

        Mia,

While I don’t get to sit around reading books all day, I do get to touch them and move them around. I also get to take my time choosing which books I’m going to read next!

Wow! This is the greatest Front Porch story EVER!!! What a pleasure it is to meet such a smart, sweet young lady. (I’m talking to Mia, so don’t get too excited, Lori!) ;)

I have to admit, you melted my heart with the answer about getting bigger kisses from your parents. I’m a softie that way.

Your love of reading reminds me of Klaus, from the Lemony Snicket books. Have you read those? My son, Hunter (he’s 9, and a cutie) and I are reading them now, for the second time. He loves those, and the Warrior Cats books.

Do you have a favorite book (or series)?

Thanks for being here, Mia! (and you, Lori!)

    :)

      Hi Lisis,
Don’t worry, sweetheart — this post is all about Mia. I’m not getting too excited, other than to have the pleasure to have worked with Mia (and her Dad) these past few weeks for this post!

She’s such an awesome young lady, and her dad is awesome, too!!!

Thanks for taking the time to be here with us, Lisis. You are a woman full of grace and beauty.

    Hey Mia!
Welcome to the front porch here – it’s a pretty great place, isn’t it!!

When I was a kid I didn’t like to read that much…except for Encyclopedia Brown (good books! or at least I thought so back then!). My son likes to read lots of books – and he remembers everything. I wonder if those two are related? Do you have a really good memory??

Keep telling jokes…keep laughing…and keep your parents on their toes!!

Yes, my parents tell me that I have a great memory. I think the oldest thing I can remember is when I was 18 months old and I shared chocolates with my mom and dad in Las Vegas.

    Hi Mia:

Wow, thanks for sharing your story and your thoughts about reading. That is so cool that you love to read! When I was your age, reading didn’t come easy for me, but I tried really hard and got better at it. I also remember when I was your age and even younger, I used to like playing with the ants. I don’t know why, but I thought it was cool to have them crawl on my hand.

Anyhow thanks for your entertaining story and thanks, Lori, for sharing your porch. The coffee’s good!

Mia, I think you would enjoy seeing the leaf cutter ants in Costa Rica. They can strip entire trees of their leaves overnight. They create highways in the ground as they march determinedly to get the leaves and then take them back to their burrow. But why? Leaf cutter ants actually use the leaves to grow mold that they eat. They are the world’s first farmers and the only animals apart from humans that cultivate food. Incredible!

Heep watching the world around you. It’s a fascinating place and wonderful to share it with you…. and Lori is quite nice too:)

(Mia, Annabel is living in Australia! Isn’t that cool!)

Thanks for saying I’m nice, sweets. I try my best, but could always do better. I’m loving my life right now here on the Porch!

      Hope all is well!

      Those ants sound fascinating!

In our backyard there is a big big big tree and there are two nests and one nest has sparrows and one nest has turtledoves. I think they’ll hatch in the spring and I will get to name one.

      I love watching nature!

    Hi Mia,
I’m glad you stopped in to join The Front Porch.

I love reading too! I love paper books, and am one of the few adults who *does not* want a Kindle or Ipad. I love going to the bookstore to look at the books, and decide exactly which I would like. I love flipping the pages hwile I read. Ten chapter books in one day is quite a lot–good for you!

I like that you laugh with your brother and friend. I think laughter is the best and it makes every day much fun!

Loved your post – just been over to read it … and loved the interview here – and I am so pleased to hear that you think proper books will be around for a while to come yet.

I agree with you – the ipad looks rather neat .. I might pop over for lessons one day soon ..

Enjoy school – are you enjoying the Olympics?

This is what I get for taking FOREVER to check my reader! Mia, I’m so happy to see you here!

I also like water but I don’t like mine with ice. Before straws the ice use to bang my teeth and I really hated that. But I guess I’d rather have that than be super thirsty!

  12. Mia
    February 22, 2010 | 6:54 am

I only like ice in my water when it’s really hot outside or when my throat’s dry. The first time I had soda was an accident. My dad had a Sprite and I thought it was ice water. I started crying because I thought the ice was burning my tongue! But now I LOVE soda even though I don’t get to drink it very much. This weekend I had root bear and 7-UP though!

Hey Mia, wow, you’re only 8 and you’re here on Lori’s blog. That’s very cool! I’ve always loved books too. They can teach you so much and transport you to all different places and times. There’s not much else that can do that.

By the way, I know what you mean by having a hot porch. I live in Australia and it gets pretty hot here too!

I guess I don’t belong here, my writing is strictly for pensive adults, dissecting thoroughly the human animal we ultimately all are. Yeah, I sense peace and harmony here, very nice.
