Sami, my blogger-buddy extraordinaire, posted a sweet post yesterday, which was inspired by Jeanne, another awesome soul.
Quite simply, it’s a call to action to name ten favorite things as well as ten favorite blogs.
I’m still blushing since last night, when Sami posted her “Ten Favorites” and included Jane Be Nimble as one her ten favorite blogs. Not only am I floored with this honor, but the company surrounding me (the other nine) are amazing folks—absolutely amazing.
One of the reason’s I’m excited to grab the baton and run with it is that I don’t have a blogroll. I prefer to link organically within my posts when someone’s blog or post is relevant to the topic at hand as opposed to hosting a blogroll (for better or worse).
I’ll start with my ten favorite things—always a lovely thing to call out. Do this in your head or write them down right now and you’ll be amazed how good you’ll feel. Really, just try it.
Ten Favorite Things
One: pin-drop silence (or soft sounds of nature)
Two: Scott making coffee for me on Saturday mornings
Three: laughing so hard that I eventually snort
Four: playing the piano
Five: snail mail
Six: a snarky merlot
Seven: California Plein Air paintings
Eight: swimming
Nine: learning something new
Ten: creating (prose, design, music, photography)
(Whew—that was seriously difficult to stop at ten. Seriously, give it a try!)
OK, now I’m to the ten favorite blogs part. This is going to be hard because of the vast expanse of great blogs out there! I’m going to split mine into three categories with three blogs each in no particular order (with the tenth as bonus at the end).
Personal Development Blogs
This is a really difficult one because so many of the blogs I read I absolutely adore and many have changed my life in one way or another. Suffice it to say, all the blogs that Sami and Jeanne listed are high on my list, too. So, be sure to check them out.
Life, Laughs & Lemmings: How can I not mention this crazy priestess of the aliens? When I need to break myself free from the normalcy of life with a smile, I go to Sami’s blog. I feel like I’m reading a vivid scrapbook when I’m at her site—complete with rum and ginger beer. Sami’s joye de vivre is intoxicating and I appreciate that she also supports, in her words, “Kick Arse Causes”. She’s a bombshell of an example for living life to the fullest!
Porsidan: I’m a sucker for a great read and Jay is one of the best story tellers out there. If you want to meet a real hero with a huge heart, amazing life stories, and the type of guy that would give you the shirt off his back, this is your man. Want inspiration? Meet Jay Schryer and the force will be with you.
360 Degree Self: I’m not sure the perfect place for Tim’s blog is in personal development because of the diverse array of his posts, but he’s helped me develop, personally, so here he’ll stay. I love Tim’s blog because he has a zest for life and it comes through in his posts. Whether he’s featuring creative people, inspiring musicians, or local happenings around his neck of the woods in Chicago, I feel like I get to see his life through his eyes. He takes me away to other places and brings them to life.
Blogs About Writing and Publishing
If you’re a regular JBN reader, you know my mission for 2010 is to finish my BOOK, find an agent, and be well on the road to being published. To that end, the bulk of the blogs I read these days are related to writing and publishing. Again, I could list an abundance of sites, but I’ll limit myself to three in this post.
Story Fix: One of the first sites I found, which continues to rock my world, is authored by Larry Brooks. At his blog, he’s whittled down the complex world of story structure and compelling prose into bite-sized pieces, which makes for more easily digested nourishment. He’s a published author and has the skills to pay the bills (not to mention he was a professional baseball player, which makes for entertaining prose at Story Fix as snippets often become incorporated into his prose).
Tumblemoose: I’ve learned an incredible amount of quality information from George Angus, including alternative publishing platforms and presenting oneself as a writer/author. His unique voice makes me feel I’m at a live play or a leaning over a glass of beer at a vibrant pub while we discuss the writing life. He’s published a lovely read, called The Writing Experience, which I’ve read, savored, and recommend. It’s available via the Kindle, another thing we have in common and both quite enjoy.
Guide to Literary Agents: As a writer looking to find an agent and be published, it’s of the utmost importance to familiarize oneself with the field and best practices. Chuck Sambuchino authors this blog, which features a mix of introductions to agents (Agent Advice), weekly columns such as, “How I Got My Agent,” and a plethora of priceless advice. I’ve learned a ton from Chuck. Give him a look if you’re in the mode of wanting to publish your work.
Creative/Artsy Blogs
Something I don’t post that much about, but is a big part of my life and holds great interest, revolves around creative endeavors such as graphic design and photography. Often, I visit these sites for inspiration, to get my writing hand moving, or for the pure pleasure of them. Here are three of my favotires.
Francesco Mugnai: This blog is updated almost every day, and I don’t know how he packs so much grooviness into his days. Francesco hunts down amazing collections of everything from jaw-dropping doodles to vintage luggage tags, to the hottest new fonts. Francesco teaches graphic design in a renowned Italian institute of Art and Design in Florence. Need a quick break? Check him out. I’d give just about anything to study with him.
Ink on My Fingers: Susannah Conway uses a Polaroid camera (among others) to capture the most amazing images—and her blog design makes me want to curl up on a huge bean bag and sip hot cocoa while I flip through The New Yorker. Her posts and photography can be quirky, sweet, or even edgy. I’m never quite sure what I’ll see when I visit her site, but I always look forward to what I’ll find.
Vaka Design: The author, Katie, is a metal smith, jeweler, and painter who creates stunning body adornments. The awesome thing is that she is also a vivid writer with a voice that she doesn’t hold back. I enjoy reading her posts because she makes me feel like I’m having coffee with her on her patio and we’re just joking around. Oh, and I ordered a ring made by her ten-year old son, Matt, called “Polka Dot Ring”. It’s fabulous!
Last But Not Least
I’ve listed nine blogs thus far in my baton run—but maybe the best is yet to be found? I’m leaving the last one open for possibility. For today, tell me one of your favorite things in the comments.
And, finally, if you’re a blogger and were named here (or not) please feel free to grab the baton and carry us through your Ten Favorites as well as Ten Blogs you enjoy. (Also, here’s a special shout out to all the other blogs I enjoy—please know you rock and I’ll call you out in an organic link soon!)
Also, stay tuned for another Front Porch post coming this weekend!
(A note about comments: if you add a link in the comments other than in the “website” box, my spam filter might send you to the spam bucket. Hang tight or send me an email and I’ll dig it out and post it for you.)

Awwww Lori! Thank you for including me here. Jane be Nimble is one of my favorite blogs, and you’re one of my favorite bloggers!

You’ve earned your spot in glory, Jay.
(Well, can’t say that JBN is “glory”, but hey it’s better than a sharp stick in the eye!)
Bask in the sunshine!

I love it when bloggers name their favs. Then I get to go and find more fascinating bloggers. Just what I need, more blogs to read. LOL
Oh, and your #1 favorite thing happens to be mine also. Keep shining!!
.-= Jill´s last blog ..The Search =-.
Hi Jill,
Great to see you!
I know what you’re saying — I’m not sure I need anymore tips about good blogs, I’m trying to pare down my blog time at the moment so I can spend more time writing my 100,000-word post (i.e., BOOK) as opposed to the 1,000-word post.
I hope you’re having a pin-drop silent day.
~xo
Wow, thanks L Bear! You’re such a sweetheart. By the way, the aliens LOVE you too! I told them what a rockin chick you are and they said they’d add you to their ‘do not probe’ list (you can thank me later).
It is an honour to have made your list my friend. Your constant support of me (and LL&L) is very much appreciated. xxx
.-= Sami – Life, Laughs & Lemmings´s last blog ..Ten Favourites =-.
Hi Sami,
This is a great idea. I’ve been meaning to write this kind of post for awhile because of my lack of a blogroll. So, you read my mind, chicka! Thank you!
Being a constant supporter of your site (dare I say, athletic supporter??? – naw, that’s probably not the best phrase) is easy schmeasy because you’re such an amazing individual.
Keep up all the great work, Sami, we appreciate you and I appreciate you adding me to the ‘do not probe’ list. Is that kind of like the “nofollow” tag?

Hi Lori:
Thank you so much for including me on your list of favorite bloggers, I am honored
You have included some blogs that I haven’t visited, which I will make sure to check out. Thanks also for sharing an interesting list of your favorite things.
Hmm, as far as one of my favorite things…I would have to say experimenting with food and trying out a new recipe. Ideally, I’m drinking a beer or glass of wine while I cook. There is something really therapeutic about having 3 or 4 burners going and feeling like I’m in the zone. Its one of my favorite ways to be creative.
Hi Tim,
Thanks again for all the time you put into finding such great treats for us.
I love that you’re so into cooking. I can absolutely see you lording over the stove with pots of concoctions steaming and a cool one on the table next to you. I think I’ll add a crisp white apron folded over and tied around your waist (just like the professionals). There, now just refill that vanilla beer next to you and you’re there! When is dinner ready? I’m on my way.
I think that’s why I loved being a scientist so much. I’d often have two or three experiments going at once and it absolutely made me feel like I was directing an orchestra — every musician in her place, making sweet, sweet music to my ears.
Lori,
I am completely humbled by your kind words. You see, I think I’m lucky to have a writing relationship with anyone of your caliber. I’ve learned a lot from you as well.
Also, I am excited to have a look at these other sites that trip your trigger.
Cheers
George

Hi George,
My caliber? My caliber? What? Like a Colt 45? Seriously, I feel like I’m just clinging to your coat tails. I’m honored to know that you learn a lot from me, too. I’ll try my best to not disappoint you.
Enjoy the sites. I think you should at least check out Francesco’s site. It’s great for writer’s block, too!
Enjoy your day, fellow writer extraordinaire!

Hi Hilary,
Oh, what a great sound, I love the sound of birds tweeting away. Well, other than the rooster Mom used to have on the farm. He was a bit much.
Thanks for the hug, Hilary. I can’t get enough of them. I’ll take it! And, what a great addition for number eleven! Excellent!
Hug back to you, Hilary.

Hey Zeenat-Zesty,
I’d love to see your list, too. You should put up a quick post over at PP! Yeah, that Jay guy is one in a million — what a lovely soul, yes?
I agree about weekend pampering. Often Scott cooks breakfast, too, but I focus on the coffee so that when he decides to make breakfast, it’s like an extra bonus.
It sounds like your life is full of love and happiness, Zeenat. Mmmmm, that makes me smile!
HUG! Create a great day!

Hi Lori!
So many things come to mind in the “favorite things” column! You did great! Sitting on the dock at the lake watching eagles soar has to be my all time favorite, though sadly it’s only a summer thing. I will certainly check out the blogs you listed – I really like the categories approach! What fun!
Hugs,
suZen
Hi Suzen,
It’s funny, really, I started to list my ten things thinking it would be kind of hard. Then, as soon as I started going, it literally took me about a 1/2 hour to whittle them back down to ten! (It was a surprisingly fun exercise!)
Good one — I love to watch birds soar over canyons and over the ocean. It’s so peaceful to me. Love it!
Thanks for your comment about the category idea. I find that I’m, more and more, spending time learning about better writing and publishing tips, and less and less time in the personal development space. I have a daily struggle divvying my reading time up amongst all the amazing blogs out there. You know?
I hope you found a new site that brings your smiles, Suzen. Enjoy your week!
~xo
I’d like to echo the others in saying that I’m so honored to have been included in your favorite blogs list. It’s great to be among this community of writers working hard to share and make a difference in an arena that is so worthwhile and so often isolating in nature. Thanks for this warm fuzzy hug this morning, you’ve inspired my day. My goal is to pass it forward, this is the hightest gratitude I can think of.
Larry
.-= Larry´s last blog ..A Slightly Off-Color Joke for Anyone Who Has Published a Book, or Wants To =-.
Hi Larry,
It’s such a pleasure to see you here today. You made my day, too. Thanks for your comments and for feeding forward your warm fuzzy. You absolutely deserved the mention, though; I’ve learned more about good writing and the writing process from you than anyone or anything else. Thank you, Larry, for giving my fingers ‘legs’.
The more I work on my book, tap into the amazing resources out there, and connect with other writers, the more I feel it really IS a group effort, this writing life. That’s a great point.
Enjoy your week and thanks for the funny joke at Story Fix — it gave me a good laugh!
Lori,
This is so fun! My favorite is spending time with my family. I can’t get enough of my hubs, daughters or grandchildren. If I did nothing else this would suffice. I’m meeting them in Chicago Friday for a whole lot of fun!
I’ll be checking out all the great blogs you’ve mentioned! xo
.-= Tess Bold Life´s last blog ..Amount Of Time Lived In Happiness & Joy =-.
Hi Tess,
I can’t agree more, family is absolutely in there, too. My step-daughter had a baby who’s now TWO and she’s such a treat. She’s a barrel of fun and It’s been really fun to watch her grow and discover. It’s fun that she’s still more interested in wrapping paper than what’s inside! ha ha
Have fun in Chi-town (stay warm!!).
I think you should, at least, check out Ink On My Fingers. I think you’d like her photography.
Thanks for taking the time to comment here, Tess. You’re an amazing soul.

.-= Lance´s last blog ..Those Challenging Relationships =-.
Hi Lance,
Wow, those are great! Yummy! Thanks for sharing, Lance. It happens to be pretty hot today (for SF), and I’m actually thinking more like: cold shower – hot afternoon.
While I may have been the creator of this blog, it’s the people who visit (like you) who make it all worthwhile so much fun.
Thanks for making my candy so much sweeter!
Keep up the great work yourself, Lance. I love my Jungle of Life: Sunday morning inspiration!
Mmmmm!

.-= Lori´s last blog ..Ten Favorites =-.
Nice post Lori. I always enjoy seeking out new blogs and it’s cool that you were able to share some of your favorites. One of my favorite things in my day is spending the morning with my dad watching CNBC, eating pancakes, (with a little bit of butter) and drinking coffee with him before he goes to work.
.-= Hulbert´s last blog ..Do Your Blogging Struggles Still Bother You? =-.
Hi Hulbert,
That’s really cool that you get to spend so much time with your dad! I really miss my dad — he’s still alive but living in a different part of the country, so I don’t get to see him very much.
You sound like a great son, Hulbert. You dad is really lucky to have you, and vice versa. I think your comment just melted “me” like butter!
I hope you found a new source of inspiration or information in my short list — I very much enjoy all of these. The hard part was limiting my list; there’s sooo many great blogs out there, don’t you think?
Enjoy life, and I wish you many more mornings of pancakes with your pops.

Hi Julie,
Welcome! Put up your feet, grab a cup o’ joe, and hang out anytime, Julie. And, by the way, you can put in your two cents (or ten-dollar words) anytime you want — the more the better.
Hey, what a great list! When I got to number seven, my mind went nuts just imagining all the possibilities. What a great thought! And, number six is a great one, too. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of that feeling (I particularly love public transportation, so I really hear you there!).
Thanks for celebrating life with me here at JBN, Julie. Enjoy your week and don’t forget to keep taking calm, deep breaths.
Life is good.
Hi Lori
Thank you for sharing your top ten likes and these fantastic blogs. Some I was familiar with, some are new to me, so I look forward to checking them out.
As for me, I so share your love of silence and/or nature. There is just such serenity in that, such peace! And I also love swimming – has been a love of mine since I was a teen and it is not going away ever

Hi Evita,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts here. It’s always great to see your smiling face.
Hey, really great that you’re a swimmer, too. I love swimming because it’s something I’ve always been able to do, even when recovering from an injury or such.
Keep up the great work and keep those tooties in the pool. I’m banking on the hope that someday all my swimming will graduate me to transformation into a mermaid.
