RAOKA: Laughter

March Theme: Laughter (chosen by me)

Let’s start with a 30-second giggle, an animated cartoon. (I love these shorts blasts of laughter.)

Click on the image below and it will take you to The New Yorker website—come back after you’ve had a laugh! If you’re viewing this via RSS, click here.

Click to watch at The New Yorker website

There’s something about chicken-and-egg jokes that not only tickle my funny bone, but reaches in to the marrow. I’m thinking it’s something to do with me growing up on a farm with chickens in combination with my science background (maybe?).

Also, that also might be why I love Gary Larson comics so much. I’d show one here, but I didn’t get permission before writing this post, so go to this site to check out a few of them. By the way, did you know Gary Larson pitched his cartoon to the San Francisco Chronicle (back in ~1979)—they loved it, syndicated it, and renamed it “The Far Side”?

OK, my next laughter pick, albeit semi-dated, has always made me laugh my arse off. Something about this bobbing baby really gets my gut busting with laughter. (This video is 2 min 50 seconds in duration.)

Check out this video, or if you’re reading this via RSS, click here.

Finally, a short-and-sweet joke. I’ve heard this one a few times over the years, but it’s one of my favorites.

A neutron walks into a bar. “I’d like a beer,” he says. The bartender slides the beer across the bar to the neutron.
“How much will it be?” the neutron asks.
“For you?” replies the bartender, “no charge.”

I chose laughter for this month’s theme, in part, because I believe it to be the best medicine. I’ve recently written about some challenges I’m facing, so even if you just do it for little ‘ole me, please leave me a dose of laughter in the comments. Thanks in advance to all of you reading. I hope you enjoyed a short snippet of laughter today! :)

Stay tuned for next month’s theme: FAMILY (chosen by Gayze).

What a fun project! Honestly, today I happened to be reflecting on a point of Paulo Coelho’s regarding laughter, and many links on many different blogs I read happened to contain laughter as well, so I learned about this project. What fun!

    Be well.

Thanks for adding your post to the links here — I can’t wait to check it out. You are welcome here and always welcome to play along with our monthly themes.

It’s quite amazing, so much laughter on the internet. I never would have believe this possible when I was a kid (and, I’m not thhhaaat old — LOL).

Glad you happened across this project, and I’m looking forward to seeing you around the blogosphere.

      Keep laughing! :P

      Hi Zany-Zeenat,

(I love the nickname you gave me, btw. You know I LOVE nicknames, right?) :P

I’m glad you agree with the dancing baby being funny — I first saw that one many, many months ago, but I bookmarked it so I can go back and laugh when I need a guaranteed dose of it. It’s sooo funny!! And, Zeenat, that’s just too cute, “Baby’s shaking his bumpu.” That single sentence made my day.

Loved your post, too, Zeenat. Thanks for being such a force for good in this world and for the RAOKA movement.

      Keep laughing!

    Hey Lori!

I LOVE the Far Side! In my opinion, it’s the second best comic of all time (behind Calvin and Hobbes). Thanks for making me laugh today, I needed that!

      Hi Jay,

Did I know that before? I don’t think you’ve mentioned that you love The Far Side — and, M2, I’m with you big time. Those comics always have me in stitches. I used to buy The Far Side calendar every year for my office up until recently. I am constantly amazed that Gary Larson could think of so many funny ways to draw nature/science.

I hope all is well and that you’re doing great, Jay. Keep laughing! :P

    Ok, YOU asked for it:

Jumper cables walk into a bar. Bartender sez, “I’ll serve you, but don’t you start anything.”

Two radio antennas fall get married. The wedding was ok, but the reception was awesome!

Grasshopper walks into a bar. Bartender sez, “Hey, we have a drink named after you!” Grashopper sez, “You have a drink named John?”

4 fonts walk into a bar. Bartender sez, “Hey! We don’t serve your type in here!”

    Cheers :-)

OMG – excellent! You can probably tell from my post that I’m a sucker for these one-liners. You nailed it, George! Thank you so much! (“You have a drink named John?” really had me busting a gut! So funny!)

Cheers to you, indeed. You rock!

I also love one-liners, Lori, but my favorite jokes are spoonerisms. I collect them. Know what they are? :-)

Q: How did the egg get across the road?
    A: He scrambled!

Okay…that’s as good as it gets!!!!

(I’m thinking you might just like it…you know, the whole growing up with chickens thing!!!)

This was a fun post!!! And I LOVE fun!!! Woohoo!!!! A great topic that you chose for this month!!

      Hi Lance,

GOOD ONE! “He scrambled.” ha ha ha

Why am I such a goof ball? I love those short jokes and one-liners.

Hey, thanks for having fun for our month of laughter — I had fun, too. Watch out for that issue you’re having with food spraying out of your mouth, Lance, or at least warn me if you’re going to blow. (LOL)

Have fun and keep up the laughter spirit all year; I know you will!
      :)

    April 7, 2010 | 3:04 pm

    Hi Lori:

Great RAOKA topic!! I love the “man walks into a bar” jokes so thank you for sharing that and the video…so priceless! Like you, I’m a huge Gary Larson fan and really miss any new material from him. I’m bad at remembering and retelling jokes but here’s one:

A man walks into a bar and says, “ouch!”

I know that was bad, but its my go-to joke when I can’t remember one. Thanks for a great and very important topic…I will have to check out what everyone else has posted.

      Hi Tim,

I was hoping you’d love this one, Tim. I’m doing my best to bring laughter to you for 2010. Am I annoying you yet? (LOL)

And, I couldn’t agree more. Those “bar” jokes get me laughing every time. I’m always happy just to remember the punch line. I think I’m going to have to borrow your “ouch” joke if you don’t mind. That’s funny!

Here’s the other one I use a lot:
A piece of string walks into a bar and orders a drink.
The bartender says, “I don’t serve strings.”
Frustrated, the string walks out. The string then gets an idea — he twists and turns and tussles about, then walks back into the bar and orders a drink.
The bartender says, “Are you that piece of string who just tried to order a drink?”
The string replies, “Nope. I’m a frayed knot.”
      (Ba da boom!)

Focusing my mind on laughter this month was just the ticket, and I hope to continue the mantra all year and beyond.

Laugh your arse off, Tim, and I’ll be seeing you around real soon!
      :P

    Lori,
I read your post yesterday, but didn’t have any jokes for my comment. Came back without one again, but I *love* all that your readers provided.
Honestly, a few years ago, I bought my close friends joke books so that whenever I needed a laugh, they would have a joke available. And here’s a tip–Jay heard that and now has an app on his Iphone, so frequently texts jokes my way…ask him, he has a bundle:)
Thank you for spreading laughter–quite healing if you let your guard down and allow for belly laughs….and my children heard me giggling over your video, so they checked it out and giggled too:)

      Hi Joy,

First, let me say that I’m glad you didn’t feel pressure to comment yesterday. I visit so many blogs and only comment to a handful every day. I always get a pang of guilt for not commenting more, but I sometimes just can’t formulate a comment. You know? Thanks for reading, and please, please, consume as much as you want — never pressure to comment. :)

Thanks about letting me know about how you bring more jokes into you life. That’s awesome! I’ll have to try that — cool you bought joke books for your friends!

Joy, that made my day when you said that even your children laughed with you. My mission today has been fulfilled — check and mate.

Enjoy, Joy, and have a great day!

When I read your joke, I literally laughed out loud — GOOD ONE!! My Dad is a dry bean farmer in the midwest. He’ll like that one — I can’t wait to tell it to him.

Thanks for visiting and for the laughter.

Nice videos :) The baby really seemed like he was in sync with the music, but the chicken and egg made me laugh more.

By the way, I sent you an inquiry about whether you take guest posts on Monday, I think, just so you know it isn’t spam. I need to hear from you before I can (possibly) pitch it to someone else, so if you could say either way that would be helpful. Thanks!

      Hi Brad,

Oh wow, I’m so sorry about having not responded to your request yet. I’ll get back to you ASAP. I have family in town this week, so my time has been limited. Apologies for my delay. Your candor speaks volumes about you (re: avoiding multiple submissions), thank you.

I’m glad you liked the snippets of laughter — I agree, by the way. Like I said, there’s something about comics/cartoons and chicken-and-egg jokes, I can’t put my finger on it, but they really crack me up.

It’s great to meet you, I’ve seen you around the internet, so I’m happy to have “met” at long last.

Be well, take care, and I’ll reply to your query very soon.

    Hi Lori,

I love the dancing baby video. I saw a clip of it on AC360, but hadn’t seen the whole thing. Too cute.

Like you, I enjoy funny jokes or stories.

Here’s a favorite of mine. It was told to me this way and is not to offend blonds. (I’ve been one several times) :)

A blond calls the fire department
Says “My house is on fire”
The fireman say’s “how do we get there?”
Blond says, “Duhhhh! Big Red Truck”

    Keep smiling…..

Hey, I am *on board* with blond jokes! When I spend a lot of time in the sun and in the ocean, my hair gets really bleached out — so I can take it! ha ha

Love the blond joke! If we can’t laugh at ourselves, what else is there?

Thanks, Barbara. Have a great weekend!
