If you follow this blog, you know I host the Front Porch series about everyday stories—stories friends exchange on front porches, back yards, or in break rooms in snippets throughout our days. Here’s another installment, perfect for summer fun!
I have ants-in-my-pants excitement to have a special guest with me today. He’s Tony Single—an artist, comic genius, poet, blogger, writer, (I could go on and on). When I go to his blog, Trottersville, I love that I never know what I’ll find. His writer voice and personality are as warm as a june bug on a summer day.
To add even more warmth to the mix, the co-creator of Trottersville is Tony’s mate Cassy. She’s as sweet as pie and I’d love to have them both over for dinner.
Those two have so much fun, in fact, here’s a sneak peek from Tony:
“Whenever Cassy and I are doing any chores around the house, we like to make up crazy weirdo songs on the fly. I’ll sing one line and Cass will sing the next, making sure that the last word always rhymes. We’ll just take it as far as we can for as long as we can, or until Cassy dissolves into fits of laughter. And then I’ll just keep doing it some more, all by myself, until Cassy’s stomach hurts. I’m evil that way!”
“But, Cass does something that always confuses me. Sometimes I laugh to myself like a crazy man about it… you know, when I’m alone and no one’s watching. Whenever there’s a mouthful of soft drink left in a bottle, instead of finishing it Cass will open a fresh bottle. I swear, she’d probably just keep on accumulating the unfinished bottles of drink until there was enough to build a house out of them! Strange girl that one. That’s why I love her.”
Without further ado, I’m pouring Tony a nice cool ginger beer while he stretches out in our woodland tent. Cassy is by my side with a bottle, too, I can already see her laughing at the whole arrangement. These two are a hoot!
Tony! I’m psyched to hang out with you. Your attitude, generosity and warmth are contagious. Thanks for being here.
First things first, it’s been a long time since I’ve been in a tent. But, I have such great memories of sleeping in the outdoors. I’d always have the wildest dreams. Also, I find that when I’m working on a project, it continues though my sleep.
What about you? Do you tend to sleep well, and what types of dreams amalgamate in you mind at night?
I tend to sleep very well, but on the rare occasion that I don’t it’s because I’ve either had a bad dream or I’m feeling sick. Fortunately, I don’t get ill too super often, but I do tend to remember all of my nightmares. I’ve dreamt about being at ground zero when an atomic bomb goes off. I’ve dreamt about being bashed by home invaders or torn to shreds by all the neighborhood dogs. I’ve even dreamt about being naked in public when every friend I’ve ever had seems to choose THAT very moment to walk on by. Good grief! I wish I could remember a lovely dream for a change!
Ha ha! I have those all the time! It’s so embarrassing, all those people walking by and me realizing that I forgot to get dressed that morning. Eee gads. Please drop me a line when you do have a good dream. Maybe you could practice by meditating before sleeping. It works for me. Think about what makes you happy, where you’d like to be or what you’d like to experience, and drift off to never land.
In fact, when do you feel the most happy, Tony?
I feel most happy when I’m creating something and it seems to be coming together in a satisfactory way. Whether it’s a comic strip, an illustration or a poem is immaterial to me just so long as I’m accurately conveying whatever thoughts and emotions I may be going through at the time. Only then do I feel that I have been truly productive.
I’m also most happy when I’m eating something that my darling Cassy has made. She makes the best minced beef wellington! Oh, and although you can’t eat them, she makes the best hugs by holding her arms out just so! She also makes the best totally unscripted and off the wall remarks I’ve ever heard. Oh, oh, oh, and she makes little crinkles around her eyes and mouth when she giggles. Hmmm… I’ll stop there before your readers start to vomit from diabetic shock!
Oh yeah, and something else! I love to read, I love to play video games and I love to listen to music! It seems like I’ve read everything from Darwin’s Origin of Species to anything by Philip Yancey. I’ve played my Legend of Zelda games to absolute death because their fantasy settings and engaging characters enthrall me. I’ve listened to the dark metal compositions of Virgin Black through to the alternative folk rock songs of Wovenhand, and even the likes of Johnny Cash and Natalie Merchant. My tastes roam far and wide, even to the movies I see. I like some of the big blockbusters just as much as some of the more obscure, indie films. Whatever grabs my emotions and imagination will usually keep me interested for a long, long time.
Tony, you are a nimble Renaissance man. You’re giving me lots of ideas and igniting my creativity. Who or what inspired your creative side?
I was inspired from a very early stage by the melancholy leanings of Charles M. Schulz’s famous Peanuts comic strip, and also by the lesser known Tove Jansson and her series of Moomintroll children’s books that were equal parts whimsy and strange. Certain animated television shows such as Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy, Rin Taro’s Prehistoric Boy Kum Kum, and Hayao Miyazaki’s Sherlock Hound also left a strong storytelling imprint on me. Over many years, I have borrowed artistic techniques from these artists and directors and infused them with my own sensibility to arrive at the style you see me drawing in today. These days, I’m also inspired by a lot of things such as books, music, movies, and other people. Potentially, everything that happens to me contains the seeds of inspiration.
I agree, Tony, so many things inspire me. As I age, I notice that people’s stories about their own lives inspire me the most.
That said, is there any advice you can give to aspiring artists out there (like little ‘ole me!)?
I’m in no position to be dispensing advice to anyone else for any reason whatsoever. I mean, what do I know, right? However, what I would say to you, Lori, is to draw, draw, and then draw some more. Draw until your arms almost drop off! Sure, it may have taken me a long time to get to my level of skill and ability, but I would absolutely be fooling myself if I thought I had arrived at the pinnacle of artistic perfection. Not even close. So draw, draw, and then draw draw draw some more. A lot more! Draw everything you see, and draw from the heart. You only get better (and continue to get better) if you hone your craft, and acquaint yourself with the goings on in the world as often as possible!
That’s great advice, Tony the Terrific. Keep doing, doing, doing, and at some point it will get easier. That’s so true. I’ll try to keep my arms from dropping off, though.
I admire your artistic abilities, Tony. But having gotten to know you better, I admire Tony the person as much as Tony the artist.
Can you dig deep and touch on spirituality with me? Have you ever changed your views about this topic?
Oh yes, that was many years ago when I finally decided to stop running and face my Maker instead. That was extremely difficult. Imagine your very being forcing you to go against everything you’ve ever held to be true and quantifiable, and instead nodding in affirmation to some strange divine paradox that some like to call “God”. The idea of there being one sure didn’t make sense to me, but a universe without some divine personality behind it all made a lot less sense. I had tried not to believe but just couldn’t do it. Richard Dawkins would be disappointed! And while my life has still had more than its fair share of ups and downs, it has turned out to be a decision that’s given me some much needed consistency.
I hear you there, Tony. I’m still trying to figure out where I stand on this and appreciate your perspective. I believe everyone should live what works for him or her. In some ways, I think the divine (faith, belief, whatever you want to term “it”) might be a moving target as we travel through life; I am fascinated by this topic. Thanks for being open and sharing.
Most of all, Tony and Cassy, you two are awesome and I hope I get to meet you two in person someday. Love to you both.

Hi Lori, Tony and Cassy,
That was a nice interview to get to know more about Tony and Cassy. They are really a very special couple and it shows in everything they do and publish at Trottersville and although some times I don’t understand the posts or the comics (from my part a mix of poor English language knowledge, a different road traveled in life and a brain somehow working also in a different way) I still enjoy the posts, humor and concepts they present in their blog. Keep going guys!
About your questions
“What tends to show up in your dreams?” Usually I don’t dream; because of my schedule I sleep one hour at night and two hours in the morning so it’s very rare that I reach the rem state.
“Do you have hidden artistic talent?” I have a natural, special talent to stain my T-shirts! I’ll tell you about that in a post someday.
“Questions for Tony?” In the things you have done and do in your life, do you move by pushing forward to a destination or flow by the circumstances to what’s ahead in life?
Hugs for you three guys
Raul
Alien Ghost´s last [type] ..Don’t Say Sorry!
Hi Raul,
Aren’t Tony and Cassy peaches? I agree that they are a very special couple. And, don’t be too hard on yourself for understanding their comics, etc. I studied Russian for a long time and even when I was in school, it was RARE that I ever *got* the Russian jokes. (sigh)
Okay, Raul, what gives. You seriously only sleep one hour a night and two in the morning? Is that possible? I’m amazed. Do you do this by choice? Or?? Please expand that thought (if you don’t mind).
I’m a fellow shirt stainer, so I’m with you my brother. he he
Thanks for joining in the fun, Raul. I really had a great time hanging out with Tony and Cassy and I’m glad you did, too.

Hi Lori,
Yes, I usually sleep no more than 3 hours a day because a have a job at night and many activities by day.
Your question inspired a post that I’ll be publishing next; hope you like it
Raul

I for one can’t wait to see it, Raul!
Hi Tony,
Just posted the explanation
Raul
Alien Ghost´s last [type] ..Love as a Drug
Raul, I’m with Lori on this… you’re a SUPERHUMAN! I could not get by on such a tiny amount of sleep! My cognitive processes would turn to mush!
And you’re in good company, staining your tees like Lori does. I know a few people in my family who stain their shirts on a regular basis! They shall, however, remain nameless for fear of sudden and swift reprisals.
In answer to your question, I’ve done a little of both throughout my life, and each approach has its own pros and cons. However, I tend to just go with the flow if I can, kind of like a ship at sea. Hopefully I’ll have the weight and drive of a ship, but not so much that the waves can’t alter my course if necessary.
Hi Raul,
I’m looking forward to checking out your post! I’m hanging with my hubs at the moment, but will be there soon!
Yay!
Lori and Tony,
I can’t get over those weird dreams you guys have. I don’t remember dreams much and really don’t care. I know I’m weird. One dream I had over and over as a kid was my bed was on fire! What the heck was that all about?
Don’t be telling me to put a journal by my bed because I won’t. Sounds like to much work;)
I love the way you describe Cassey and it’s a joy to have a view into your relationship. I need to play music more. In fact I’m going to put on U2 or sting when I finish this comment. I love the tent drawing and I’m trying to convince hubs to camp again but it’s not going very well!
I think I’m rambling…I love the Peanuts cartoons and as a kid would draw the characters and one of our first dates was seeing a Charlie Brown movie at the theater. I thing Charles was brilliant!
Lori thanks for having Tony and Cassy today. It’s so good to know more about our online friends…these two are so sincere!
Oh and I love how you say to draw, draw, draw I’m going to the store to purchase “Inktense” I saw it on a blog the other day and it sounds like creative medicine to me.
Tess Bold Life´s last [type] ..Why Is Life Good
Tess, you dreamt that your bed was on fire?! Man, I haven’t had that one yet, but now that you mention it I probably will soon enough…
And thank you for your lovely comments about the tent drawing and the beautiful Cassy. I’m very fortunate that she agreed to be part of my life so many years ago…
Inktense? I’ve not heard of that. I must google it and see what that’s all about.
Hi Tess,
Hey, welcome aboard. You’re welcome (for having Tony and Cassy here). They are so much fun and I’m honored that Tony took so much time out of his busy days to let me pick his brain. And, wow, what a complex brain he has!
I agree with Tony, I need to check out “Inktense.”

Hey Y’All,
What a lively group you’ve brought together here! Tony, Lori, and Cassy – quite a trio. Although I must say I’m worried about Raul, because I don’t think he’s getting enough sleep. Everyone needs REM. And unlike Tess, I love to talk about dreams. So much good stuff there. Last night I dreamed there was a raccoon sleeping in a box full of baked goods, and the people around me thought nothing of it. I, however, knew that something was off. I won’t bore you with what I think the dream means, but I will say if something is not quite right in a dream, and you notice it when you’re in it, then that’s a good thing.
Sweet dreams, everyone.

Hi Patty,
Aren’t Tony and Cassy fun? I just love them to pieces. I have so many Aussie blogger buddies now, it gives me more of a reason to kick Ms. MS in the rear so I can get over there and say howdy to my hip friends. Wanna come?
And, I know, what’s up with Raul? That’s amazing — I don’t know how he does it.
There’s that storyteller in you, Patty, noticing details that others overlook. That’s what makes a good story teller in my book, it’s all about the detail and noticing things others might not about life. Oh, and yes, please “bore” me, I’d love to hear what you think the dream meant.
Sweet dreams to you, too, Patty!
~xo
Hi Patty, thanks for joining the menagerie!
I’m with Lori… I’d love to know what you think the dream means too, especially if it involves a raccoon!
Hi Lori and Tony and Cassy!
Lori, thank you for this as I have read some of Tony’s comments here and there, and this allows me to get to know him even better!
It is fascinating indeed to dive deeper into each of our stories, of what makes us, us – at the present time.
Creation does make life super fun… whether we are creating a new relationship or building a bird house – I so agree that this is when I am most happiest most often too!
And I enjoyed reading your thoughts on God/Religion/Spirituality.
Having gone through a massive shift myself, I can relate to having one’s belief system turned upside down. I went from a particular religion to today, being open and forming a relationships with all of life from an inner guidance and it has been so incredible every since. My soul feels freedom, and I understand so much better how I and the rest of this cosmos fit into the bigger picture of things… with lots of room for my own creativity

Evita, thanks for joining this rockin’ party!
It’s interesting, isn’t it, how what we believe can undergo such massive shifts during our lives. Perhaps it’s an indication of an inquisitive nature that seeks to understand the unexplainable, especially when it comes to the spiritual. And when it comes to that, I think I’ll always be the “novice” when it comes to understanding.
Hi Evita,
It’s soo soo awesome to see you here. Thanks for popping by!
I can see the shift you’re experiencing, Evita. I’m loving all of it. Your comments reflect you so well, your soul is feeling freedom and I can see it in your web presence, too. Lovely!
And, Tony, I don’t believe you (sorry, dude). I don’t think you are a “novice” at anything!
Have a great day, all.
Hi Lori,
Thank you for hosting Tony, and Cassy, here today…Awe-some to see them share your space:) May I bring s-mores and come visit outside of your tent?
Hi Tony,
what you share is so genuine and real..I love what you and Cassy share..I can imagine the energy in yoru home is amazing and fun and visitors would get folded in with a hug from Cass, listen to the music you’ve picked, eat a fantastic dinner, belly laugh with delight, and go home satisfied on so many levels..
That is how I feel when I read your blog, or comments, what you share online..you both delight..thank you for that!
As for dreams..I won’t even begin to interpret them for you..but I do believe in the significance of dreams and what they are trying to tell you.. I know you have tons on your mind, and I hope you rest well…
And LOL Tess your bed was on fire..look up the meaning in that *grin*…
Tony–much love to you and Cassy…I’ll send some butterflies and glitter your way to Light up your already beauty filled place…the Love you share together, and the ease with which you relate, is Divine and inspirational to me..Thank you!!!

Lori,
I usually hate to be late to a post, but this time I was glad I was. I read both the post and the comments. It was so nice. I liked that you interviewed Tony as it gave me a change to know more about him and Cassy.
I agree with Tony about his advice to you:~)
Regarding Raul not sleeping. I’m sure he’s fine. Remember the title of his site? Maybe, there’s more to this Alien Ghost thing than we know?????
Seriously, while most people do need six to eight hours of sleep, there is evidence that gifted people can get by with only a few hours of sleep a day.
Sadly for me, if that’s the meaning of “gifted,” it doesn’t apply to me. I need a full eight hours:~)
Great interview, wonderfully funny guest and interesting comments…what more could you want when visiting a site…thanks Lori and Tony:~)

Sara, I’m like you. I need a full eight hours of sleep too. I can function on six if that’s all I happen to get, but more is always better for me.
And yes, it was a great interview, wasn’t it. Lori has a way of making you feel comfortable, and she asked some doozies that I had to really stop and think about!
Hi Sara,
Your site inspires me to the hilt — you’ve unlocked creativity cabinets for me many times. I appreciate you!
Thanks for joining in the fun today. I’m honored to have Tony and Cassy here for some summer fun. Good to see you’re sleeping well, too.
Enjoy your day and thanks again for play time.
Hi Lori: Great front porch interview…I enjoy what I learned from Tony…especially the advice to draw. I’m not so good at drawing, but that won’t stop me from trying. As long as I amuse myself. As far as dreams go, I seem to have a lot of dreams where I’m being chased. My dreams seem to have a sort of movie quality to them (minus the soundtrack). Perhaps this was inspired by watching the Chicago Blackhawks in the playoffs in recent months, but I had a few dreams where I played a lot of hockey (go figure). In my dreams I’m Wayne Gretzgy
Thanks for a very entertaining front porch post!

Hey, and thanks for reading our little chat!
Hi Tim (Wayne),
That’s awesome, that you dream you’re Wayne Gretzgy. When you get chased in your dreams, you should just turn around and block with your hockey stick. That will stop ‘em!
Enjoy your day, Tim, it is lovely to have you here today — especially as someone who has graced my Front Porch in the past. I really enjoyed your time here, too, Tim!

What a great interview…I remember chase dreams or something I am responsible for like getting everyone on a certain plane and I can not seem to do it…
I keep an inspirational passage by my bed and think about that right before I sleep and that helps calm down the fire!
I learned a great deal about Your work and energies and what fun you are – and creative.
I think we would all like to meet these two individuals and share some time on the front porch
Mr T sent me
Patricia, that sounds like good advice to me. I will definitely try that. Perhaps something a little inspirational will put me in a more relaxed state of mind before I go to sleep at night…
It’s a fantasy of mine for me and Cass to meet all of our blogging buddies some day. Anything is possible, I suppose!
Hi Patricia,
I’m incredibly honored and fortunate Tony and Cass could make time for little ‘ole Jane Be Nimble. I’m glad you enjoyed this interview, Patricia. (Also thanks for Tweeting the post — you’re sweet as honey!)
Getting everyone to a certain plane in your dreams, sounds like you’re life might be hectic. Take care of yourself, OK? It’s good to see you have a method to keep the fires low.
And, Tony, I’m on board with your fantasy to bring our blogging buddies together. If we build it, they will come.
Lori, Tony said I had to say “Mr. T sent me”.Thank you for this delightful interview.
Tony is a delight. His dreams? Not so much – lol! You can just feel his energy emanating from his artwork and his words. His love for Cassy is not vomit-inducing – it’s absolutely beautiful!

And, I agree, Tony is so gushy-mushy in love with that gorgeous Cassy — but who isn’t? She’s a peach! I love her, too.
Thanks for sitting a spell, I hope you feel refreshed and happy.
Smiles to you, Talon, and I’ll see you ’round real soon.

Great interview and discussion. I really took a lot away from this so thanks for sharing it. I particularly liked what Tony’s advice to just draw, draw, draw and pour your heart into it. I am by no means an artist, but I think this advice is so applicable to anything that we are trying to do in an extraordinary way. It is all about connecting with that side of ourselves where our creativity is able to pour through to whatever we are doing. I think when you really invest a lot of time in your craft and put your passion into what you are doing, you can connect with things in great ways. Thanks to you all for the inspiration.

I have a feeling you know exactly how important it is to apply passion to your craft. I have a feeling you’ve done exactly that, Sibyl.
Thanks again for joining us on the Porch and I wish you a beautiful week.
Sibyl, I think you hit the nail on the head there. Passion is definitely the key. I want to thank you for reading!
Hello, Lori. You’ve chosen a wonderful artist to interview here for your Front Porch series. Such a pleasure to learn about his artistic influences, his dreams, and his spiritual journey — which we’ve gotten flashes of over at Trottersville, but never quite so comprehensively. I owe Mr. T. for giving me directions to your place.
If you don’t mind, I’ll pull up a whitewashed rocker and “set a spell,” as they say in North Georgia. I’ve even brought my own fan, because it’s hot out!
I suspect we all have so many artistic talents, undiscovered sometimes even by ourselves… but it depends upon our culture and opportunities and experiences as to which ones we uncover and develop.
While reading Tony’s description of his nightmares, I realized that my own nightmares are very “psychological suspense” style, and not necessarily violent. For instance, a few nights ago I dreamed that I was in a place with no access to the outside, all white plaster walls and floors and ledges with rounded edges, staircases & corridors leading off everywhere, and no observable source of light — yet all lit. Weird things happened in it, like me ordering a fish at a Burger-King like kiosk and being served a navel orange with a shiny knife embedded in it instead, and then later F. (my husband) chasing me with a stolen grocery cart through corridor after corridor, throwing tiny red pompoms at me. (The grocery cart was full of the things. Obviously.
And if anybody has an interpretation of that, I’d be happy to hear it. For some reason, it felt very ominous — even though it sounds ridiculous.
I’m pretty certain Tony would not steal a grocery cart, and positive he would not chase dear Cassie with it.
Meredith´s last [type] ..help- I’m melting…
Meredith, we’re in the middle of winter here, and yet we’ve had nearly a week of unseasonably hot weather! Weird!
Can I just say that that is one of the strangest dream I’ve ever had the privilege to read about! I wouldn’t even attempt an interpretation of that! I can only hope that Cassy would never chase me around with a grocery cart, either in my dreams or in reality! As for me, I would never ever do such a thing to her! Much…
Hi Meredith,
Hey, I recognize you from over at Trottersville — I love your locks! Thanks for following Mr. T’s orders and popping over to the porch to set a spell (love it!).
I’m with Tony, that is one of the strangest dreams I’ve ever hears. Wow! I want to make a movie out of it! I loved this line, “throwing tiny red pompoms at me…” LOL! Maybe he was only cheering you on?
Have a great day, Meredith and thanks again.

Hi Hilary!
Sorry for my belated reply — been having a knock-down drag-out with Ms. MS. (I think I have her corralled for the moment!)
Thanks for supporting Tony and Cassy. I really believe they are actually angels amongst us and watching over us by making us laugh and smile.
Hope all is well on across the Pond!
