Your Shelter

Greetings,

I have a love affair with all things cosmological.

In fact, just last night I watched (again) another video episode of Cosmos—a thirteen-part TV series broadcast by PBS in 1980, hosted by my hero Carl Sagan. Yum. Much of my poetry plays with concepts involving the heavens and heavenly bodies. What could be a better muse? In today’s poem, I play with personifications of the sun and moon.

Enjoy!

I hope you enjoyed my contribution for One Shot Poetry Wednesday, hosted by the awesome people behind One Stop Poetry, an online meeting place for creatives like poets and photographers. Rock on, master poets!

For a cornucopia of beautiful poetry, please make a stop to One Shot Wednesday and tell Pete I say hello.

I invite you to share your thoughts or try your hand at writing a poem in the comments. Expressing yourself is good for you. :)

      Hi Caroline,
You’re so kind, thanks a lot! And a big woot for COSMOS. I know what you mean. I was just a youngster when I saw the series live and I’ll never forget Carl’s description of the 4th dimension by using Flatland as an analogy.

      Brilliant!

Enjoy, Caroline, and I hope you’re feeling better.

    Lori,

This is so cool. I can see the moon and I loved the words that created the image. You are really shining through these artistic creations. I love that you’re allowing us to experience your talents in so many different ways!

    You rock, Surfer Girl:~)

You asked…I confess this isn’t a brand new poem, but I think it fits the concept of the beauty of the Universe and how everything happens in cycles.

A small seed waits in the dark and fertile soil.
A small seed breaks open into tiny green buds.
A tiny green bud grows, filling out into a tree.
A large tree branches into budding flowers.
A beautiful flower dies; her seeds fall to the soil.
    And once again…
A small seed waits in the dark and fertile soil.
Aren’t you glad that God recycles?

      Hi Tim,
Awwww, ***blusing*** big time. Thanks, my friend. Means a lot coming from you. And, hey, no pressure ever to contribute. What’s important to me is to place the nugget into the mind for a method to express oneself, and the best way may be simply to write in a notebook or to trace it in the sand. :)
      Have a great day, Tim.

Hey, Lori—-I loved the shape poem and especially the last line. I am so happy to see you write lovely poems and invite everyone to try their hand at writing. I believe we all have an inner poet and an inner artist and you always invite them to come out to play with you. What fun! And, hey, I loved that you named me your “Haiku Angel!” :) )

So, I am helping a poet friend whose husband is very close to death in Hospice House. This is a very unexpected death from a rampant cancer that spread like wildfire. All her friends and I can do is be with her and hold her and let her cry. That seems to be enough for now.

Anyway, I wrote a haiku for her:

    Haiku for Sharon

    On this maple branch
two birds sat singing one song…
    now one sings alone.

I am sorry to bring a sad note to this beautiful post, but this is what is going on. And this, too, is a part of life and poetry is about life.

    Thanks for letting me share.

    oxoxoxo Jean

      Hi Jean (Haiku Angel),

I love your line about all of us having an inner poet. Agreed! My mom actually used to write short poems for me that always rhymed. They were fascinating. :)

Jean, I’m really glad you touched on the subject of poetry being about life, and that really does encompass the good and bad, the winter and summer of our lives.

The poem you shared is very special and I adore it and you. Beautiful, absolutely beautiful, Jean.

I’m honored to have you in this space today, and I’m sending lots of love your way.

    Hi Lori,

Cosmos, by Carl Sagan…what a treat for the mind, isn’t it? It makes you wonder about space, planets, earth, and also about human life and the human brain.

I haven’t been around for a while, so the changes on your blog are new to me. It looks fantastic! More airy, lighter, free! I love it! :)

      Hi Raul,
It’s lovely to see you back around the block. Welcome back to blog land. ;)

Yes, agreed re: Dr. Sagan. I attribute my initial scientific inquiries to him, which later landed me in advanced studies of science. What a guy! Very moving indeed.

Thanks for your kind comments about what I’ve done differently around here. I love art and design, so decided I could probably work on my own site. :) I free-drew the illustration at the top based on how my hair looks blowing in the wind. ha ha (should really get a trim!)
